For Immediate Release

Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-NY) has released the following statement in response to the Debt Ceiling vote:

"After voting ‘no’ on the Debt Ceiling vote, United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has publicly criticized this legislation as an "unbalanced approach” that “did not include new taxes on the wealthiest Americans and the elimination of loopholes benefiting corporations”.

But I never heard her nor any Democrat from New York City (except for Senator Tom Duane and me) criticize Governor Andrew Cuomo for not including a Millionaires Tax in the Governor Cuomo’s Budget that was clearly balanced on the backs of the poor and needy.

State Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. first proposed the bill that will now slap pimps, prostitutes and johns caught plying their illicit trade within 1,000 feet of a school with automatic felony charges.

At least this is the impression and feeling everyone is getting by reading the city newspapers that two weeks after their vote, Mayor Bloomberg, who previously declared his intentions to support and help finance any senator who would vote in favor of gay marriage and complied with his edict, sent a check to each one of them for the maximum amount allowed by law.

My Spirit Continues To Be Uplifted

During the past two weeks, I have worn a badge of honor as the only Democrat in the New York State Senate to oppose Governor Andrew Cuomo's legislation to redefine our definition of marriage from one man and one woman.

Christians are never afraid to be alone because we know that we are never alone.

I have been blessed the past two weeks with an outpouring of support from countless New Yorkers who have embraced me on the street, called me, written to me, and posted online thanking me for standing strong for my convictions. These include:

He held a massive rally against the bill weeks before it was introduced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to the state Legislature. When the bill was introduced for a vote Friday, he was also the only senator to speak against the bill on the floor.
