Senate Approves “Nixzmary Brown Bill”

[Albany, NY]  Last night Senate Bill 6091, better known as the Nixzmary Brown Bill has passed in the New York State Senate. With the hope that it will help raise awareness during this new school year, and deter child abuse and neglect in New York State,  Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz, Sr. (D-Bronx), the bill’s sponsor, has pushed for this legislation to be passed during today’s Senate’s Session.

This past Tuesday night, the Iglesia Evangelical Refugio de Salvacion was burglarized.  The criminals involved left a note on the altar of this church with anti-Hispanic comments.

This is not an isolated incident. 

While this church was being vandalized, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a report that documents what is a serious problem in Patchogue, is a growing national problem.

Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) will host a Breakfast on Monday, August 17, 2009 from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM with representatives from organizations for whom he will allocate discretionary funds in 2009.  The event will take place at Maestro’s Caterers located at 1703 Bronxdale Avenue near Morris Park Avenue in The Bronx.

Letter to Congressman Henry Waxman re Section 1233 of HR 3200

Dear Congressman Waxman:As Chairman of the New York State Senate Aging Committee, I am deeply concerned that a provision that targets senior citizens in Section 1233 of House Resolution 3200 may preempt New York State rules and practices.  This proposed federal health care legislation’s impact upon the elderly citizens of New York State needs to be sensitive to what may be considered a “state’s rights” issue, which may be best dealt with at the state level, and not imposed by Washington.

Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz Demands Apology from Senator Jeff Klein

State Senator Rev Ruben Diaz, President of the New York State Senate Puerto Rican/Latino Caucus, is demanding an apology from Senator Jeff Klein’s statement calling them “irrelevant” and “people like that”. By saying “people like that” does he mean Hispanic or what?

Senator Klein made this statement after four Senators, Ruben Diaz, Hiram Monserrate, Martin Malave Dilan and Carl Kruger walked out of a session called by their conference after adjourning Governor Paterson’s Extraordinary Session.

Four Amigos Plus One

In an effort to break the stalemate in the New York State Senate, Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz said that he and Senator Carl Kruger, Senator Pedro Espada and Senator Hiram Monserrate will be joined by Senator Martin Malave-Dilan for breakfast today at 9am at the Crowne Plaza in Albany. 

According to Senator Rev. Diaz, “We are encouraged that Senator Martin Malave-Dilan is the newest member of the Amigos, and we remain hopeful that this huge mess will soon be a thing of the past due to our efforts.”
