The year 2011 has been one of ups and downs for our community: we have endured political scandals; Governor Andrew Cuomo’s budget has practically eliminated programs and services for the needy in our community; marriage between men with men and women with women was imposed on our people; an extreme sex education curriculum has been introduced into the public schools of the city of New York by Mayor Michael Bloomberg; and the elimination of the use of the public schools by churches for worship and service to our Lord. These are among some of the many and most important events of the year 2011.

Creative Celebration

Dear Participant,

Thank you for your wonderful contribution to the Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration. In our first year, we received outstanding poems, essays, and artwork that exemplify the creativity of New York State’s young people.

The submissions received are remarkable in what they represent – showing gratitude and respect for family, friends, our troops fighting overseas, and many other important subjects and activities. I am humbled and honored to see such inspiring contributions in response to what is a deceptively difficult question: “What are you thankful for?”

On behalf of the New York State Senate, I would like to offer my wholehearted congratulations to all of the participants in this year’s Thanksgiving Day Creative Celebration.

For Immediate Release

December 13, 2011

New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) has released the following statement in response to the killing of veteran NYPD Officer Peter Figoski:

“My prayers and deepest sympathies go out to the four daughters, parents, brother, family and friends of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski who was shot in the face and killed in the line of duty in Brooklyn on Monday.

During the past few months, a lot of criticism has been directed toward the NYPD, sometimes with a complete disregard for the real dangers police officers take every day when they respond to calls. Tragically, NYPD Officer Figoski’s death reminds us of those dangers.

While the City’s poor residents were the losers of the week, Walmart was the big winner.

The local, state and national media have reported that, in terms of sales, this past Thanksgiving weekend was the largest in history.

"Black Friday," as the day after Thanksgiving is called, generated an unprecedented $52.4 billion in sales, providing an enormous boost to the economy. Despite the fiscal crisis, consumers spent a historic amount of money on “Black Friday.”

Shopping centers, supermarkets and all types of stores were overcrowded with people, including rows of consumers who either slept or stood in lines for more than 48 hours prior to "Black Friday."
