Senator Tom Duane's Retirement

You should know that New York State Senator Tom Duane today has announced his decision not to seek re-election.

Even though there are two social issues – gay marriage and abortion – that Tom Duane and I have never agreed on and have very strong and differing points of view on, I have to say that I have mixed feelings about him leaving the Senate.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to dictate to us how much soda we should drink. With this action Mayor Bloomberg confirmed what I wrote a few weeks ago in one of my “What You Should Know” columns, that some elected officials want to create in New York a Nanny State.

There is a common assumption that politics is dirty, and that politicians cannot be trusted because they are liars, conniving hypocrites, back stabbers, and selfish people, always looking out for themselves, and always double-crossing those who trusted them and those who gave them opportunities and placed them in high positions.

You should know that history teaches us about many cases where people have been double-crossed through treasonous acts committed by those who they have placed their trust in.

Leroy Richard Archible

Leroy Richard Archible, born in Memphis, Tennessee in July, 1931, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1950. He served in Korea from 1951-1953 and was discharged in 1960 as a Sergeant. His awards include the Korea Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, a Korean President Unit Citation, a United Nations Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars.
