WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

By Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz

32nd Senatorial District Bronx County, New York

The Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, has decided to prohibit churches and religious groups from using auditoriums in public schools for worship services to our God.

You should know that this is not the first time that Mayor Bloomberg has demonstrated his rejection of everything that has to do with religion.

During the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers- where more than three thousand people died- Bloomberg forbid formal prayers and the participation of religious leaders, including the Catholic church’s Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

Distrito 32 Condado del Bronx, New York

Dear Archbishop Dolan:

On this Feast of the Three Kings, I join with New Yorkers to celebrate the news that you have been selected to serve as a Cardinal in the Catholic Church.

I heard you say in a television interview that you are “honored and humbled” by this inspired choice of Pope Benedict XVI and as one who considers you a friend, I would like you to know that New York is blessed by this choice.

In the great spirit of interfaith unity, I look forward to your years of leadership in New York and I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

LO QUE USTED DEBE SABER

Por el Senador Rev. Ruben Diaz

Distrito 32 Condado del Bronx, New York

I also need to express my strong opposition to his proposal in his State of the State Address to build a DNA databank of samples taken from criminal defendants in New York State.

The year 2011 has been one of ups and downs for our community: we have endured political scandals; Governor Andrew Cuomo’s budget has practically eliminated programs and services for the needy in our community; marriage between men with men and women with women was imposed on our people; an extreme sex education curriculum has been introduced into the public schools of the city of New York by Mayor Michael Bloomberg; and the elimination of the use of the public schools by churches for worship and service to our Lord. These are among some of the many and most important events of the year 2011.

“My prayers and deepest sympathies go out to the four daughters, parents, brother, family and friends of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski who was shot in the face and killed in the line of duty in Brooklyn on Monday.

During the past few months, a lot of criticism has been directed toward the NYPD, sometimes with a complete disregard for the real dangers police officers take every day when they respond to calls. Tragically, NYPD Officer Figoski’s death reminds us of those dangers.

While the City’s poor residents were the losers of the week, Walmart was the big winner.

The local, state and national media have reported that, in terms of sales, this past Thanksgiving weekend was the largest in history.

"Black Friday," as the day after Thanksgiving is called, generated an unprecedented $52.4 billion in sales, providing an enormous boost to the economy. Despite the fiscal crisis, consumers spent a historic amount of money on “Black Friday.”

Shopping centers, supermarkets and all types of stores were overcrowded with people, including rows of consumers who either slept or stood in lines for more than 48 hours prior to "Black Friday."
