Statement from Senator Hassell-Thompson

As Chairwoman of the New York State Senate Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction, I was very disturbed to hear of last Wednesday's shooting incident in the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. My colleagues and I will be taking a close look at the 2007 law that allowed certain sex offenders, such as Ken-Tweal Catts, to be released from civil confinement. Recent criticism following last week's attack has focused on the provision of the 2007 civil confinement law that allowed juries the ability to grant freedom to sex offenders.

State Senator Hassell-Thompson Heralds Education Bill Benefiting New York’s Senior Citizens

State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Bronx/Westchester) today announced that the Senate passed a bill which would allow seniors in New York State to take college courses for credit without paying tuition at State-operated campuses.

"In 1974, seniors in New York were given the opportunity to audit courses at the State University without tuition or credit. This bill would expand on that law by enabling seniors, aged 60 and over to attend courses without tuition while also receiving credit for their courses," the Bronx/Westchester lawmaker said.

Forum Cites Lack Of Diversity In Police Forces

MOUNT VERNON - A community forum yesterday generated calls for a "crisis intervention" in response to local police forces' lack of diversity and recent incidents of excessive force.

About 200 people attended the Detective Christopher A. Ridley Law Enforcement Community Relations Forum yesterday at Grace Baptist Church. The event was named after Ridley, a Mount Vernon police officer mistakenly shot to death in White Plains by four Westchester county police officers during Ridley's intervention in a Jan. 25 street fight.

New Task Force Will Address Domestic Violence

Senate Democrats introduced a new task force last week aimed at combating incest and domestic violence by making their eradication a state priority.

"Domestic violence should never be in the shadows," said Senate Minority Leader Malcolm A. Smith, D, WF-St. Albans. " of domestic abuse can carry their physical and emotional scars for a lifetime," said Smith, " all must look to bolster and improve support  for victims, as well as, to strengthen measures to combat continued acts of domestic violence."

Bronx/Westchester—Encouraging New Yorkers to "take control of their lives," State Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson (D-Mt. Vernon) today urged constituents, in recognition of the June 27th observance of National HIV Testing Day, to make an appointment to get tested.

The lawmaker noted that getting tested on a regular basis is the only way for people to "protect themselves, their partners, and their futures."

Between the demands of work, caring for loved ones, and the upkeep of homes and cars, many men put off getting an annual checkup, she noted.

I am so impressed for the award which you gave me.  Actually I should have  written to thank you immediately I returned from the USA but I was so much  involved in the campaigning to get the nod from my delegates for the MP  ship which I made mentioned to you.  Unfortunately I lost but I think  there are a lot things I can do to help my District.
