GOVERNOR PATERSON SIGNS LEGISLATION TO STRENGTHEN PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Governor David A. Paterson today signed into law a bill to enhance protections for victims of domestic violence. The new legislation, a program bill introduced by the Governor last spring and whose terms were agreed upon between the Governor and legislative leaders, holds individuals more accountable for their abusive actions and improves upon the court system’s response to affected families.

Statement from Senator Hassell-Thompson

As Chairwoman of the New York State Senate Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction, I was very disturbed to hear of last Wednesday's shooting incident in the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office. My colleagues and I will be taking a close look at the 2007 law that allowed certain sex offenders, such as Ken-Tweal Catts, to be released from civil confinement. Recent criticism following last week's attack has focused on the provision of the 2007 civil confinement law that allowed juries the ability to grant freedom to sex offenders.

SENATE PASSES BILL PROTECTING NURSES

(Albany, NY) - On Tuesday, May 26, 2009, the New York State Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 4018, introduced by Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Chairwoman of the Senate Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections. This legislation would add registered nurses and licensed practical nurses when defining assault on emergency medical professionals. It would also provide for a Class C felony charge for those who cause physical injury to nurses who are performing their duties.

SENATE PASSES BILL PROTECTING CHILD VICTIMS

(Albany, NY) - On Monday, May 18, 2009, the New York State Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 3402, introduced by Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Chairwoman of the Senate Standing Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections. This legislation would allow for the New York State Crime Victims Board to compensate young victims for property damage, transportation to court and counseling. In previous years, the law stipulated that no compensation would be allowed for child victims unless they were physically harmed.

Senate Passes Bill to Extend The Bronx Zoo's One Free Day Admission Policy

(Albany, NY) - On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, the New York State Senate passed Senate Bill 3755, introduced by Majority Conference Chairwoman Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson and co-sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader Senator Jeff Klein. This legislation will allow the Bronx Zoo to continue to reserve at least one day each week as free admission day to the public for another three years.
