5/19/2010: Helping Residents Feel At Home 2

On Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Senator Huntley held her second town hall meeting at Baisley Houses. Michael Kelly, NYCHA General Manager, Carolyn Jasper, NYCHA Director of Queens/Staten Island Management Department joined Senator Huntley to listen to the concerns of the residents. Several key concerns were mistreatment of tenants by management, lack of repairs, the poor condition of playground courts, and the lack of a community center. At the end of the meeting many of the residents felt their concerns would be acted upon.

5/04/2010: St. Albans Veterans Hospital Resolution

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION urging the New York State Congressional delegation to direct the Veterans Administration to build a full service veterans hospital on the grounds of the St. Albans Veterans Facility, St. Albans, New York

WHEREAS, St. Albans Veterans Facility opened in 1943 as the St. Albans Naval Hospital; and

4/28/2010: Senator Huntley Supports West Point Day

The Senate Democratic Majority honored officers and cadets from West Point Military Academy today, passing a resolution proclaiming April 28, 2010 as West Point Day in New York. Each year, the Senate commemorates the establishment of the United States Military Academy at West Point and recognizes the special relationship New York has with the academy.

4/20/2010: Queensborough Community College of Nursing

Enacts the "safe staffing for quality care act" to require acute care facilities to implement certain direct-care nurse to patient ratios in all nursing units; sets minimum staffing requirements; requires every such facility to submit a documented staffing plan to the department on an annual basis and upon application for an operating certificate; requires acute care facilities to maintain staffing records during all shifts; authorizes nurses to refuse work assignments if the assignment exceeds the nurse's abilities or if minimum staffing is not present; requires public access to documented

4/11/2010: Census Rally

On Sunday, April 11, 2010 New York State Senator Shirley L. Huntley, Assemblyman William Scarborough, Councilman Leroy Comrie, Jr. along with several other elected officials and The Southern Queens Park Association, held a Census Awareness Rally at Roy Wilkins Park in Jamaica, New York in an attempt to boost the Census questionnaire response rates in the Southeast Queens area. Southeast Queens response rate came in very low in comparison to other communities.

New York State Senator Shirley L. 3/24/2010: Resolution Honoring Dr. Olivia Hooker

On Wednesday, March 24th, the New York State Senate passed a Legislative Resolution honoring Dr. Olivia Hooker, a psychologist and former college professor at Fordham University who resides in Greenburgh, New York. Dr. Hooker, who became the first black woman to enlist in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, is a survivor of the Tulsa Riot of 1921. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins introduced the resolution in recognition of Dr. Hooker’s outstanding achievements and contributions to the advancement of women and civil rights.
