In July, dozens of supporters called on the buildings department to quickly resolve the problems created by a contractor who allegedly forged documents that led to the closure of a gym in Springfield Gardens

The process of trying to reopen a Curves Gym that was shuttered by the NYC Department of Buildings last July hasn’t been easy. The department told the owner of the Springfield Gardens gym, Shauwana Dill-Darby, that the certificate of occupancy was invalid because the contractor she hired allegedly forged an engineer’s signature on the documents used for its acquisition. According to Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown, the contractor, Satroghaun Singh, repeated the practice on nearly 300 other documents related to building plans in Queens.

9/21/2007: Alleged Fraud Closes Springfield Gardens Gym

Shewanna Dill-Darby’s gym, Curves, was filled with women working out on July 19, when Department of Buildings officials walked in and asked to see building inspection documents. It was then Dill-Darby learned the building’s temporary certificate of occupancy –– proof the building structure is suitable for the intended use –– was invalid. The certificate was obtained by her contractor Satroghaun Singh, who allegedly forged an engineer’s signature on nearly 300 documents related to building plans, according to the Queens District Attorney.
