Albany—The Alliance for Quality Education issued a report today titled Unequal Opportunity Equals Unequal Results. During his campaign for governor Andrew Cuomo asserted that, “There are two education systems in this state. Not public-private. One for the rich and one for the poor and they are both public systems.” Based on the findings of the report AQE warned that large cuts to education in next week’s Executive Budget would increase educational inequity and would hurt students living in poverty and students of color the most.
Southeast Queens is at the epicenter of the national mortgage crisis. Homeowners in the district, I represent continue to need access to information and quality services, at a time when the media and federal government’s attention are beginning to move away from the plight of homeowners. Our community is built around the institutions of church and family. We must draw on these strengths to build the supportive environment that homeowners at-risk of foreclosure will need now and in the future. The obstacles that many of them face prevents stable and long-term homeownership from occurring within our communities.

Getting The Facts About Foreclosure
(D-Jamaica) On Tuesday, April 19th at Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Saturday, April 23rd at York College. Senator Shirley L. Huntley, Councilman Ruben Wills, and Councilman Leroy Comrie, Jr., in cooperation with the Connect Queens Campaign and many other sponsors held meetings and workshops discussing and helping educate residents about foreclosure prevention and preserving homeownership.
On May 3, 2011 Senator Huntley met with many members of District Council 37 (DC 37) in her Albany office and at the convention center. Senator Huntley has supported the hardworking efforts of DC 37 and the millions of middle to working class people who are a part of the group. DC 37 spoke with Senator Huntley about legislation and other pending bills that would be very controversial or have their football spirit.
