Senator Shirley L. Huntley (D-Jamaica) was clearly at home as she spoke in an open forum at the invitation of the community and 113th precinct located at 167-02 Baisley Boulevard. During the meeting she briefly explained her role in the New York State Senate and discussed several initiatives she has been working on. Some of the following intiatives are increasing the number of adult homes for the mentally and physically disabled and launching a "Wednesday Night Speak" where she speaks to community members about their concerns.

Tuesday, August 3rd is America’s Night Out Against Crime
In an effort to increase public awareness and encourage participation in local anticrime efforts, Senator Huntley (D-Jamaica) notes that Tuesday, August 3rd (between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm) is National Night Out — “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” An event which is beneficial to all.
S. 2322 GriffoAdd § 240.33 Penal L. Establishes the crime of aggravated harassment of a police officer or peace officer; provides for such an offense to be a class E felony:CRIMINAL SANCTION IMPACT.
A person is guilty of aggravated harassment of a police officer or peace officer when, with the intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm a person whom he or she knows or reasonably should know to be a police officer or peace officer engaged in the course of performing his or her official duties, he or she strikes, shoves, kicks or otherwise subjects such person to physical contact.

On May 23rd, the Republican Senate Majority passed an ill-conceived bill that will disproportionately affect minority communities. Senate bill 2322 by Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R-Oneida County) seeks to establish the crime of aggravated harassment of a police officer or peace officer and make such crime a class E felony.
