STATEMENT BY SENATOR SIMCHA FELDER ON CONTAINMENT OF MEASLES OUTBREAK IN BROOKLYN

“While I am delighted that the measles outbreak in Borough Park and Williamsburg has been contained, we cannot allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of security. This disease can quickly and easily be transmitted again.

Now is the time to be proactive and ensure that anyone who still has not been immunized gets the proper vaccinations. Those who remain unvaccinated continue to pose a great health risk to their family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors.

Measles, mumps and rubella are very preventable diseases. If you have questions or concerns about immunizations, please contact my office at 718-253-2015 for assistance.”

140 Yeshivas Attend Felder’s Transportation Workshop

Over 140 school administrators and transportation coordinators from across the five boroughs packed into Ateres Chaya Hall in Borough Park on Wednesday, June 26, to attend a workshop hosted by Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) about the new changes to the school bus transportation law. Each attendee received a packet from Senator Felder containing valuable information designed to help administrators navigate the new changes.

This past March, the New York State Legislature passed Senator Felder’s historic legislation that provides an increased level of safety and protection for grade school children in the City of New York. Starting in the 2013-2014 school year, any public, private or parochial school that holds academic classes from 9:30 A.M. or earlier to 4:00 P.M. or later, is now eligible to receive enhanced transportation services, with pick up and drop off within one block of a child’s home. An allocation of $12 million has been earmarked for this program.

FELDER: “WE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT AND WE WON!”

Legislation (S4777D) co-sponsored by Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) that protects providers of services for the developmentally disabled from state funding cuts passed the New York State Senate today. The bill was sponsored by Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn). The legislation would appropriate up to $90 million, or as much as is needed, to the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to protect providers from funding reductions if recommended savings measures fall short of projections.

“We fought the good fight and we won,” said Senator Felder. “We did not back down. We did not take no for an answer. And we delivered for one of our most vulnerable populations. Restoring this funding was unequivocally the right thing to do, and I am extremely proud to have been part of this effort.”

Senator Felder Says Stay Safe This Summer

With the advent of the summer season, Senator Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) is reminding people to stay safe and prevent potential tragedies by exercising caution.

“One of the leading causes of home burglaries during the summer months is unattended newspapers and circulars which accumulate on the front steps and lawn, indicating that no one is in the house,” said Senator Felder. “I urge homeowners to put a Do Not Place Unsolicited Circulars On This Property sign in the window of their house. A sign can be obtained for free by calling my office at 718-253-2015.” Leaving lights on a timer also acts as a deterrent for potential criminals.
