Senator Saland Announces Budget Passed Today To Include A Cap On Dutchess County’s Medicaid Costs

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that a new Medicaid relief program will provide over $19 million in tax savings for Dutchess County.

The savings will result from new cost controls and a cap on local Medicaid costs as well as an accelerated takeover of the Family Health Plus program. There will also be increased accountability and cost containment measures in place to improve efficiency. Among those cost containment measures are a preferred drug list and an increase in certain co-payment requirements.

Titusville Intermediate School Wins Senator Saland’s Reading Olympics

 

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that Titusville Intermediate School has won his Summertime Reading Olympics Program. Titusville had the largest percentage of eligible students participate in the reading program.

IBM has generously agreed to provide a series of five educational workshops as part of IBM’s On Demand Community Initiative to the winner. This program, led by a team of IBM volunteers, will provide software and activities to help promote math, science and literacy.

Senator Saland’s Legislation To Promote The Use Of Environmentally Sensitive Cleaning And Maintenance Products In Schools Is Signed By The Governor

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that his legislation (S.5435) to promote the use of environmentally sensitive cleaning and maintenance products in schools has been signed by the Governor. The legislation was introduced at the request of Governor Pataki.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that human exposure to air pollutants indoors can be two to five times, and occasionally up to 100 times, higher than outdoor levels.

Senator Saland’s Legislation To Strengthen Penalties Against Child Sex Offenders Passes Senate

     Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), today announced that the New York State Senate has passed his legislation imposing stricter penalties on Internet pedophiles (S.1086) and adults who sexually abuse children in their care (S.1085).     Presently, Internet child pornographers can be prosecuted for the same charge whether they promote one or many obscene images.

Senator Steve Saland: The MTA Tax Equals Higher Property Taxes

     The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), on the recommendation of the Ravitch Commission, has proposed a payroll tax on all wages in the Hudson Valley counties served by the MTA – Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Westchester and Rockland. The Commission, instituted by the Governor to develop ideas to ease the MTA’s severe financial problems, proposed a tax of 33¢ on each $100 of wages paid in these five counties.

Statement By Senator Steve Saland

Today, the Senate passed its one house budget in preparation for negotiations with the Assembly. Our budget amends Corrections Law to provide that the Governor must give 24 months notice of the closure of a correctional facility instead of the current 12 months notice. The amendments also require the Governor to provide an adaptive reuse plan for the facility at the same time as the notice of closure -- current law provides that the reuse plan be submitted six months prior to closure.

Senator Steve Saland Secures State Grant For Rhinebeck Fire Department

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced he has secured a state grant of $9,700 for the Rhinebeck Fire Department which will be used to purchase a fire extinguisher training kit, emergency traffic signs, collapsible safety cones and high intensity vests. “Firefighters are dedicated to saving lives and property and risk their lives on the job every day,” said Senator Saland. “I’m pleased to have been able to secure this funding for the purchase of this important equipment so property tax payers will not have to bear the burden.”
