Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill, S.8641, the Well Water Education Act, which would inform the public of the potential health effects of consuming water that does not meet New York’s drinking water standards, as well as provide information regarding potential contaminants, migration of contamination in groundwater and advise homeowners that well water should be tested regularly by a certified lab.

Senator Steve Saland Announces Funding For City Of Poughkeepsie Waterfront

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced passage of a Legislative Resolution containing $500,000 in funding for Waterfront Development in the City of Poughkeepsie at the former DeLaval site. The funding will be used to create a dock which can accommodate vessels such as tourist sightseeing cruises and dinner cruises as well as other large vessels, in addition to the smaller vessels using the marina daily. A canoe and kayak launch will also be constructed in order to improve public access to the Hudson River.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill, S7051A, which would ensure that students and parents have comprehensive, age-appropriate Internet safety resources and technical assistance to help them use the Internet responsibly. The bill directs the Commissioner of Education to develop age-appropriate resources and technical assistance for schools to provide to students in grades three through twelve, and their parents or legal guardians, concerning the safe and responsible use of the Internet.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced passage of Senate Bill 7467 which would require the Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services to provide at least 24 months notice prior to a correctional facility's closure, to certain local governments, the affected employees and the employee labor organizations. Saland is a prime sponsor of the bill.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill to protect consumers from paying too much for a certified copy of their deed. Senate Bill 8517 would require companies that offer to obtain copies of a certified deed, for a price, to notify consumers that the certified copy of their deed can be obtained from their county clerk for a small fee.

Saland Announces Bill To Strengthen Nutritional Guidelines For Schools

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill to develop statewide nutrition standards for all food and beverages sold to students during the school day. The Children's Healthy Access to Meals Program (CHAMP) directs the Commissioner of Education to collaborate with the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture and Markets to develop statewide nutritional standards for elementary and secondary schools by December 31, 2008. School districts would be required to abide by the standards beginning with the 2009-2010 school year.

Saland Bill To Provide Relief To Taxpayers In Fairview Fire District Passes

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill, S.525A, to provide relief to taxpayers residing in fire districts overburdened by tax exempt properties. Seventy-seven percent of the total market value of the property in the Fairview Fire District in Dutchess County is tax exempt, causing an excessively high fire tax burden. In 2007, Fairview firefighters responded to 1,818 alarms with only four firefighters on duty. In addition, 50% of Fairview's call volume was to tax exempt properties.
