SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION TO ESTABLISH RESULTSNY.GOV WEBSITE

The New York State Senate today passed legislation (S.3657) to create a new website, ResultsNY.gov, that would enable the public to review the performance of government programs to see how effectively agencies are spending tax dollars. People visiting the site could also submit their own suggestions and recommendations on how to stop government waste and reduce state spending.

Designation honors Saland’s commitment to agriculture

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C Poughkeepsie) today announced that he has been named to the New York Farm Bureau’s “Circle of Friends” for the 2011 legislative session. The award is based on a legislator’s voting record on issues of importance to New York agriculture, bills sponsored by the legislator, as well as overall legislative support for agricultural issues. Senator Saland has been named to the “Circle of Friends” every year since its inception in 1990.

SENATE REPUBLICANS ANNOUNCE 2012 NEW JOBS-NY JOB CREATION PLAN

Plan Would Create Jobs, Cut Taxes and Control State Spending

Members of the Senate Republican Conference today announced details of the 2012 NEW JOBS-NY Job Creation Plan that includes significant tax relief to encourage the creation of new private sector jobs, measures to ensure fiscal responsibility and control state spending, as well as other reforms and incentives to make New York more economically competitive. The plan will be included in the Senate budget resolution to be acted on next week.

Parents would be informed they have a right to withdraw consent of driving privileges

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C - Poughkeepsie) today announced that the Senate has passed his legislation to require the court to notify parents that their child, who holds a junior driver’s license or a learner’s permit, has committed a traffic infraction. The bill also requires that the notice inform parents they have the right to withdraw their consent for their child to continue to hold a junior license or permit (S.1419).

SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION PROHIBITING HARMFUL LEVELS OF TOXICS IN CHILDREN’S JEWELRY

The New York State Senate today passed a measure that would prohibit the sale of children’s jewelry which may contain harmful levels of cadmium and other hazardous substances. The bill (S.4055A) protects children from accidentally ingesting cadmium, often used in inexpensive charm bracelets, pendants and other jewelry.

SENATOR SALAND'S STATEMENT ON AID FOR RECENT TORNADO VICTIMS

Recent tornadoes have caused extensive damage throughout the heartland of America. Five states (Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, and Georgia) have reported deaths, totaling at least 38 victims. Many local governments and voluntary agencies are providing shelter for disaster survivors displaced by the storms, but the road to recovery will be a long one and further assistance is always welcome.

SENATE PASSES PACKAGE OF SEX CRIMES BILLS

Legislation would keep children safer, increase penalties for criminals

The New York State Senate today passed a series of bills increasing penalties for people convicted of sex crimes against children.

The Senate passed legislation (S1541A) that would increase criminal penalties for sexual contact between a child and a person in a position of trust, which includes any adult responsible for supervision of children when they are not with their parents. Currently, there are no additional penalties for sexual contact with a minor by persons in a position of trust.

6 Projects to Receive $175,000 Total Funding in Dutchess County

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C – Poughkeepsie) today announced that law enforcement agencies in Dutchess County have received grants under the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program totaling $175,000.

“Law enforcement agencies play a critical role in protecting our state, yet like many entities, they operate within tight budgetary constraints,” said Senator Saland. “These grants will provide much needed funding to better equip Dutchess County law enforcement agencies, thereby bolstering the safety of our community without burdening the local property taxpayers.”

SENATE PASSES “TIFFANY’S LAW”

Bill Would, For the First Time, Link Convictions for Operating Different Vehicles While Intoxicated

The New York State Senate today passed “Tiffany’s Law” (S.2860A).  The bill would require all prior convictions of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, whether it be an automobile (DWI), snowmobile (SWI), or all-terrain vehicle, be considered during sentencing of a subsequent Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) conviction. In turn, any person convicted of BWI would have that charge considered during any subsequent DWI, SWI or ATV offense.
