Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) led the debate on Real Property Tax relief on the Senate floor today. Senator Saland offered up an amendment which would include STAR property tax rebates, a cap on the school tax levy, an optional freeze on school taxes for seniors, mandate relief for schools and a circuit breaker which would offer tax breaks for those earning less than $250,000.
Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) announced the passage of Governor Cuomo’s real property tax cap bill in the State Senate. The imposition of a property tax cap will benefit local taxpayers by limiting the annual tax levies imposed by school districts and local governments.
The bill limits the local tax levies to 2% or 120% of the consumer price index, whichever is less. Exceptions to the cap include support for capital expenditures approved by the voters.
In his delivery of the State of the State Address, Governor Cuomo managed to strike a balance which was both optimistic and realistic. With a new spirit of cooperation in Albany, unlike the dysfunction we have been witnessing in Washington, we were able to make state government work for the people once again, and made 2011 the most productive year in modern state history.
