The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.638) which allows local governments to authorize property tax exemptions for people who make improvements or changes to their homes to accommodate senior relatives or disabled people. The legislation means that homeowners are able to add on to their homes for this purpose without having to pay higher taxes resulting from increased property assessments.
The Dutchess County "Are You Okay?" program is a free senior safety program meant to ensure that elderly individuals living alone don't go unnoticed in the event of an emergency. A computer generated phone call is placed every day that asks the registered individual simply, "are you okay?" If the person fails to answer after 15 minutes, steps are taken to ensure that the individual is safe and in good health.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) will host the 21st Annual Dutchess County Golden Gathering on Saturday, September 15th, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at Arlington High School, 1157 Rt. 55 in LaGrangeville.
As in past years, this year’s event will include free health screenings, entertainment, door prizes, and information tables geared towards the interests and needs of area senior citizens.
"Many seniors look forward to attending the Golden Gathering each year to obtain valuable information, take advantage of free health screenings and maybe even win a door prize,” said Senator Saland. “This year promises to be as informative and entertaining as years past and we hope seniors will join us on September 15th.”
