SENATOR SALAND PASSES SEVERAL BILLS TO PROVIDE ENHANCED PROTECTIONS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE VICTIMS

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C - Poughkeepsie) today announced that the Senate has passed his legislation that requires the court to consider certain risk factors to the victim when determining bail (S.1414A), allows for the entering of an order of protection upon sentencing (S.1428),  amends the definitions of “victim of domestic violence” and “family and household members” for the purposes of domestic violence prevention (S.4222), and  imposes stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm based upon conviction for certain misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence (S.4244).

CYBERBULLYING: ANOTHER CRY FOR HELP - By Senator Steve Saland

In the wake of the most recent publicized tragedy in which a young boy, merely 14 years old, took his life to escape bullying, we must consider our response to the torment this child must have suffered. We know too well that as horrid as this occurrence was, it does not stand in isolation.

While some may advocate for stronger laws that would impose a criminal penalty on bullies, it is even more important that we address acts of bullying before it escalates to the point of no return.

SENATOR SALAND: NEW YORK STATE MUST EXTEND PROTECTIONS FOR MANDATORY REPORTING BILL ON CHILD ABUSE

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C - Poughkeepsie), Chairman of the Senate Codes Committee and an author of  a number of child protection and domestic violence laws, announced that New York State must act on his legislation which requires suspected acts of abuse by a person in a position of authority to be reported immediately to law enforcement.

SENATOR SALAND ANNOUNCES NEW FACEBOOK APP TRACKS SEX OFFENDERS

Program allows parents to quickly search surroundings for threats to children

State Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) today announced that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has launched a Sex Offender Locator application which is accessible via the New York State Public Safety Facebook page. The app makes it easier for parents who want to quickly look up information regarding Level 2 and Level 3 Sex Offenders within their immediate area.

New law will bar people convicted of domestic violence misdemeanors from purchasing firearms

Senator Steve Saland (R, I, C - Poughkeepsie) today announced that Governor Cuomo has signed his legislation to protect victims of domestic violence by ensuring that pertinent information regarding certain violent misdemeanor crimes is considered, as required by federal law, when determining whether a person is qualified to purchase a firearm (S.4244C).
