ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER'S

A longtime supporter of the Alzheimer's Association, I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's in Dutchess County. The walk, emceed by my good friend Bob Miller of WBPM-FM in Kingston, raised a record amount of charitable funds which will help to provide much needed care and support to people affected by the disease as well as fund critically needed research.

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES "JOBS EXPRESS" WEBSITE NOW LISTS 52,000 JOB OPENINGS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK STATE

Jobs Express Has Been Visited Over 200,000 Times In First Four Weeks Job Fairs Announced to Fill 100 Positions at General Electric

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that "Jobs Express," the state's new website designed to help New Yorkers who are seeking employment, now lists 52,000 job openings and has introduced improved search tools. In the past four weeks since the launch of Jobs Express, the website has been visited over 200,000 times and has listed an additional 10,000 job openings.

SENATE ISSUES MID-YEAR ECONOMIC AND REVENUE REPORT

Senate Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos and Senate Finance Committee Chairman John A. DeFrancisco today released a mid-year economic and revenue forecast for New York State. A copy of the report can be found at the Senate website, www.nysenate.gov.

“This year, the Legislature and Governor worked together to close a deficit that was more than three times the size of next year’s projected deficit, and we did so without raising taxes,” Senator Skelos said. “Senate Republicans are prepared to manage next year’s budget in the same fiscally responsible manner while we focus on promoting economic growth and creating new jobs.”

STATE'S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS TO 7.9% IN OCTOBER

ALBANY, NY (11/17/2011)(readMedia)-- New York State's unemployment rate fell to 7.9% in October 2011, down from 8.0% in September, the State Labor Department reported today. The number of unemployed New Yorkers also dropped over the month – from 758,200 in September to 757,000 in October 2011.

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES HEALTH INSURER RATE FILINGS NOW AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC

Filings on Department of Financial Services Website

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that rate increase requests from health insurers are now available on the Department of Financial Services' website, www.dfs.ny.gov. DFS has determined that all rate increase requests should be available so that the public could comment effectively, but health insurers initially objected. Then, led by United Healthcare, the insurers dropped their objections.

CAPITAL REGION COUNCIL UNVEILS 5-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN

The Capital Region Economic Development Council unveiled its five-year strategic economic development plan for the Capital Region at a press conference at the Albany International Airport Monday. 

Proposals for transformative projects that would sustain and grow jobs by leveraging $11 in private sector investment for every $1 invested by the State are included within the plan.

MID-HUDSON REGION ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OUTLINES 5-YEAR PLAN FOR GROWTH

The mid-Hudson Valley has the location, skilled workers and natural resources to fuel future economic growth, but business and political leaders have some work to do to maximize its potential.

Those were some of the findings and observations contained in the Mid-Hudson Region Economic Development Council's five-year plan. The 88-page report, released Monday, will be used as a guide for state agencies that provide funding for economic development here, said council Co-Chairman Dennis Murray, president of Marist College.

Additional Housing, Business and Infrastructure funds available following tour by Upstate Storm Recovery Task Force

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, joined by his Cabinet, announced additional resources for storm victims following a tour by the Upstate Storm Recovery Task Force of the areas affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

"This summer, our state suffered from two natural disasters that devastated communities across New York," Governor Cuomo said. "I recently deployed the Upstate Storm Recovery Task Force to assess the most pressing concerns on the ground and report back so we can coordinate on providing additional resources where they are most needed."

Program allows parents to quickly search surroundings for threats to children

State Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C – Poughkeepsie) today announced that the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) has launched a Sex Offender Locator application which is accessible via the New York State Public Safety Facebook page. The app makes it easier for parents who want to quickly look up information regarding Level 2 and Level 3 Sex Offenders within their immediate area.

SENATOR SALAND: FIRST REPORT ISSUED ON THE MTA FORENSIC AUDIT REVEALS FISCAL ABUSE

For years, I have been demanding the need for a forensic audit of the MTA.  Under intense public pressure, the Comptroller commenced a forensic audit in 2010.  In the first of a series of reports to be issued by the Comptroller, he points to abuse, manipulation of the system, inflated salaries and pensions, and supervisors signing their own attendance records.  Is anyone surprised? Given the history of fiscal mismanagement of the MTA, I’m willing to bet this first audit is the tip of the iceberg.  And I’m not a betting man.   Perhaps if the Comptroller unearths enough abuse, MTA will at long last be forced to clean up its act, stop wasting our tax dollars, and be forced to live without the payroll tax.
