Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced passage of his bill (S.5670B) to protect against discrimination on the basis of disability in the area of public accommodations.

"While the federal Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, New York State has lead the nation for many years in ensuring that accommodations are made for people with disabilities so they can enjoy many of the same programs, services and activities which able-bodied people take for granted," said Senator Saland.

Senator Steve Saland Announces Passage Of Two Bills Dealing With Swimming Pool Safety

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that two bills he introduced regarding swimming pool safety have passed both houses of the Legislature.

Senate Bill 1092B seeks to make swimming pools safer for homeowners and neighboring residents by requiring that a pool owner have a permanent enclosure erected within 90 days of the issuance of the building permit or the start of the installation of an in-ground swimming pool, whichever is later.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) has announced passage of a new proposal, S.5998A, designed to reduce real property taxes by requiring the State to assume a school district’s contribution to pension costs. School districts would then be required to lower their property tax levy by a comparable amount. The entire Senate Majority has joined Senator Saland in cosponsoring this measure.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that his bill (S.5669) to protect students from abuse in school has passed the Senate. The bill would enhance reporting requirements when children are abused on school grounds and strengthen background checks for school bus drivers and attendants.

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced passage of his bill to require local courts to notify parents that their child, who holds a junior driver’s license or a learner’s permit, has committed a traffic infraction. It also requires that the notice inform parents they have the right to withdraw their consent for their child to continue to hold a junior license or permit.

"When a teenager holding a learner's permit or junior license commits a traffic infraction, it could indicate a lack of experience, maturity or ability," said Senator Saland.

Senator Saland Announces Senate Passage Of His Bill Dealing With School Superintendent Contracts

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that his bill dealing with contract terminations for school superintendents has passed the Senate.

When a school superintendent leaves employment before the end of his or her contract, Senate Bill 1094 would authorize a board of education to negotiate a compensation agreement on the unserved portion of the contract as long as it does not exceed 25% of the average annual compensation provided for in the contract.
