Senator Saland Announces Local Winners In Statewide Environmental Contest

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that fourteen local students have won statewide recognition for environmental awareness through the state Senate’s 15th annual "I*MA&GREEN*NATION" competition. The students are from The Deveraux School and St. Peter’s School in Dutchess County.

"I am very proud of all our local winners who competed against students from around the state in this year’s I*MA*GREEN*NATION contest," said Senator Saland.

Senator Saland Introduced Legislation To Reimburse School Districts Efforts To Ensure More Accountability

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced he has introduced legislation that would allow claims auditing or internal auditing services to be considered a state aidable shared service (S.7499). The legislation assists school districts in their efforts to ensure greater accountability, while protecting local taxpayers from being burdened by an unfunded mandate.

Last year, there was great public outcry because of events that occurred in school districts, most notably on Long Island, in which millions of dollars were stolen by school administrative personnel.

Senator Saland Introduced Legislation To Create Funding For Farm-to-school Initiative

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced he has introduced legislation that would establish the Farm-to-School Enhancement fund (S.7498) to promote a partnership between local farms and school districts.

"The New York State Farm-to-School program promotes the purchase of local farm products in order to increase the purchase of those products by school districts and other educational institutions in the State, as well as promotes greater use of more nutritious products in our schools," said Senator Saland.

Senator Saland Introduced Legislation To Allow For Emts To Draw Blood At The Request Of A Police Officer

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced he has introduced legislation that would allow medical personnel to draw blood from a suspected impaired driver at the request of a police officer. (S.7500) "Current law is burdened by a loophole, if not by a gaping hole," said Saland.

"Unfortunately, intoxicated drivers who are involved in motor vehicle collisions too often escape prosecution," said Senator Saland.

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), today announced that he has introduced legislation that would impose stricter penalties on Internet pedophiles (S. 7352) and adults who sexually abuse children in their care (S.7353).

"Tragically, research shows that approximately 90 percent of children who are sexually abused are victimized by adults who are known to them most often over a long period of time," said Saland.

Senator Saland Introduces Legislation Allowing For Reimbursement Of Attorney Fees Related To Open Meetings Law

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), today announced that he has introduced legislation that would award the costs and fees in proceedings to enforce a violation of New York State’s Open Meetings Law.

"The Open Meetings Law was enacted to ensure that the deliberations of elected bodies are open to the public and in turn, to ensure accountability and public debate," said Saland.

Current law has had a discouraging effect on those organizations who seek to hold their elected officials more accountable.

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that his legislation (S.5416) to reduce the paperwork mandate on school districts and BOCES by eliminating and streamlining planning and reporting requirements by schools has passed the Senate. This legislation would eliminate or consolidate 90 mandated reports.

This legislation eliminates and streamlines school district and BOCES planning and reporting requirements by reducing duplication and burdensome separate reporting systems.

Senator Saland's Legislation To Permit Child Victims And Witnesses To Testify Via Closed Circuit Television Passes The Senate

Senator Steve Saland (R-C Poughkeepsie) today announced that the Senate has passed his legislation to minimize the emotional harm to child victims and witnesses in murder, attempted murder cases (S.470), or criminal assault and endangering the welfare of a child (S.469) cases by allowing them to testify via closed-circuit television. In 1985, the New York State Legislature approved a law allowing children to testify by closed-circuit television in court proceedings involving sexual abuse.

Senator Saland Secures $400,000 For Hudson City School District

Senator Saland Announces More Than $4.1 Billion Dollars In Tax Relief

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that the budget agreed on by the Legislature will provide a total of more than $4.2 billion in tax relief over the next two years, including almost $2 billion in property tax relief. In addition, $72 million is included for STAR cost of living increases for senior citizens.

The budget includes the Senate's plan for property tax relief, announced by Senator Saland in December, in the form of direct rebate checks to property taxpayers.

Senator Saland And Senator Leibell Announce Additional State Aid For Dutchess County For Property Tax Relief

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) and Senator Vincent Leibell (R,C,I Patterson) today announced that the 2006-07 state budget awaiting passage this week includes a $1,164,247 increase of state aid for cities, towns and villages in Dutchess County to help ease the burden of local property taxes. Combined, the proposed additional revenue aid for cities, towns and villages for the county totals $7,081,006.

Senator Saland Announces Agreement Reached For The Education Budget

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), Chair, Senate Education Committee, today announced that an agreement has been reached among members of the Joint Education Budget Conference Committee for the 2006-07 Education Budget. The budget provides a record $1.1 billion increase in general support for public schools, an increase of $450 million more than provided in the Governor's budget proposal, a nearly 7 percent increase in school aid.
