Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that the Senate has passed two budget reform bills that would end late budgets by putting a contingency budget in place if a new budget is not enacted by April 1.
Budget reform bill (S.2), which passed both houses last year would:
-Provide more time for budget negotiations by requiring an earlier submission of the Executive Budget;
-Change the start of the fiscal year (SFY) from April 1st to May 1st, beginning in SFY 2006-07
-Provide for greater detail and more disclosure in the budget
Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that a new federal law that will allow taxpayers to deduct any donations to tsunami relief efforts in Southeast Asia through January 31, 2005 on their 2004 federal tax return will also apply to residents filing 2004 New York State tax returns.
"This tragedy has resulted in generous donations by many who are anxious to help the victims in Southeast Asia," said Senator Saland.

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that he has spoken with the NYS Workers Compensation Board and the Office of General Services (OGS) to voice his concern over the closure of the Workers Compensation Board site in Hudson.
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno has announced that he has appointed Senator Stephen M. Saland (R, C Poughkeepsie) as one of four Senate Majority appointees to a joint legislative Conference Committee on Budget Reform. Senator Saland, who is Chairman of the Senate Education Committee, is joined on the Budget Reform Committee by Senator Owen Johnson, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee as well as Senator Thomas Libous and Senator George Winner.
