SENATE PASSES TOUGH AUTO INSURANCE FRAUD MEASURES

The New York State Senate today passed three bills to combat auto insurance fraud, which costs New Yorkers more than $1 billion a year, as well as legislation that would impose stronger criminal penalties for staging auto accidents. Recent cases of auto insurance fraud have uncovered massive crime rings, including doctors, lawyers and scam artists who staged accidents and used New York's no-fault insurance program as their own giant state-sponsored, ATM machine.

In an action hailed by law enforcement throughout our State as the single most effective crime fighting tool, I sponsored a law in collaboration with Governor Andrew Cuomo that just expanded DNA databank collection in New York State to include all felonies and all penal law misdemeanors.

Despite the overwhelming and convincing evidence that DNA collection leads to greater justice delivered in convicting the guilty and exonerating the innocent, there are those who object to the expansion.

SENATE PASSES BILL TO INCREASE PENALTIES FOR ROBBERIES WITH FAKE EXPLOSIVES

The New York State Senate today passed legislation that would increase penalties for criminals who attempt robberies with devices appearing to be bombs or explosives. The bill (S. 720A) was developed in collaboration with law enforcement. It would elevate the criminal charge from third degree to first or second degree robbery.

SENATE PASSES “BUY FROM THE BACKYARD” ACT TO BOOST LOCAL AGRICULTURAL PURCHASES

The New York State Senate today passed the “Buy From the Backyard Act” to promote the purchase of food grown or produced locally. The bill (S.2468) requires state agencies with food contracts to buy at least 20 percent of their food from New York sources.

SENATOR SALAND ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT ON DNA DATABANK EXPANSION

All Felony and Penal Law Misdemeanor Convictions Would Require Submission of DNA Sample

Senator Steve Saland (R-I-C, Poughkeepsie) announces an agreement reached on his bill providing the largest expansion of the state’s DNA databank since it was created in 1994. The legislation is similar to the databank expansion plan proposed by Governor Cuomo in his Executive Budget and the bill sponsored by Senator Saland which passed earlier this year in the Senate.
