Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Stands with Women's Advocacy Groups to Urge Governor Paterson to Enact New Protections for Domestic Violence Survivors

While violent crime overall has declined in recent years, violence against loved ones is on the rise.  In 2008, intimate partner homicides increased 25% statewide and 45% in counties outside New York City.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), joined by representatives from the Pace Women’s Justice Center, My Sisters’ Place, Hope’s Door and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, today called on Governor Paterson to sign into law sweeping legislation to strengthen the rights and protections of domestic violence survivors and increase the criminal penalties for domestic abuse.

Landmark Education Reforms Secure New York's Place as Finalist in Race to the Top Competition

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), chair of the Senate Education Committee, today expressed confidence that the sweeping education reforms she sponsored in the Senate have not only ensured New York’s inclusion as a finalist for federal Race to the Top funding, but will also make the state a strong contender in the final phase of the competition.  At stake is up to $700 million in federal education dollars.

Legislature Bans Use of Harmful Chemical in Child Care Products


Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce that legislation prohibiting the manufacture, distribution or sale of certain child care products containing bisphenol-A (BPA) passed the Legislature and is awaiting consideration by the Governor.  Senator Oppenheimer was a strong supporter and co-sponsor of the bill in the Senate. Legislature Strengthens Penalties for Violations of Petroleum Bulk Storage Regualtions

Legislature Passes Oppenheimer Smart Growth Bill

Legislation combats sprawl and promotes environmentally sound infrastructure development 

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce passage of her bill, the State Smart Growth and Infrastructure Policy Act (S.5560B/A.8011B), which will combat modern development practices that have contributed to urban and suburban sprawl.  The legislation passed both houses of the legislature last week and will now be sent to the Governor for his consideration.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Announces National Foundation for Women Legislators' Essay Contest

Seven female high school junior and senior students will win an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) annual conference and receive a $3,000 college scholarship. Applicants must write an essay addressing this year’s topic, “Freedom and Civic Virtues,” which calls upon students to describe how moral principles and the United States Bill of Rights shape the role of young adults in civic engagement.

New York Legislature Passes Landmark Bill Extending Healthcare Coverage for Autistic Patients


Oppenheimer co-sponsored bill now awaits Governor’s approval

The New York State Legislature passed legislation protecting families and children affected by autism spectrum disorders from exorbitant healthcare costs.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) was a key co-sponsor of the legislation (S7000B), which passed the Senate on June 9th, with unanimous, bipartisan support.  Earlier this week, the Assembly passed the bill, which will now be sent to the Governor for his approval.

At a ceremony held in Albany on May 25th, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) paid tribute to Dr. Eileen Santiago, naming her a 2010 Woman of Distinction.  For the thirteenth year, the New York State Senate has honored contemporary women whose contributions have enriched the quality of life in communities throughout the state.  Dr. Santiago is the principal of the Thomas A. Edison School in Port Chester.
