In an effort to more effectively advocate for the needs and concerns of their constituents, the five New York senators representing Westchester County will convene a public hearing to assess the priorities and impacts of Governor Paterson’s proposed SFY 2010-2011 budget on the residents, communities, organizations and elected officials of Westchester. Senator Suzi Oppenheimer chairs the Westchester Senate delegation, which includes Senators Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Jeff Klein, Vincent Leibell, and Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
On August 30, 2010, Governor David Paterson signed into law the State Smart Growth and Infrastructure Policy Act. This groundbreaking new law will fundamentally change the way that state agencies fund public infrastructure projects by requiring the use of smart growth principles to combat sprawl and promote environmentally sound development. Passage of the law was a top legislative priority of environmental groups throughout the state.
Leading environmental advocates, elected officials and community groups joined together to celebrate enactment of the Smart Growth Infrastructure Policy Act (S.5560B/A.8011B). On August 30, 2010, Governor Paterson signed this important legislation into law, which establishes state smart growth infrastructure criteria and requires state agencies to review and consider these guidelines when allocating funds for public infrastructure projects.
The law requires the relevant state agencies to form smart growth advisory committees that will consult with residents, environmental groups, local officials and other stakeholders before approving state construction projects.

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, Senator Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is urging families to open their hearts, closets, and attics to find donations that can help keep the homeless and needy warm and sheltered this winter.
Senator Suzi Oppenheimer is pleased to announce legislative passage of her bill, S. 1846A, which would allow SUNY Purchase to lease land for the development of a senior residential learning center on campus. The senior facility would be operated by the Purchase College Advancement Corporation, a not-for-profit corporation.
University officials and interested seniors have long advocated for a residential learning community for seniors and sought legislators help in approving this public-private partnership.
“We are extremely grateful to Senator Oppenheimer and the NYS Senate for passage of the bill, which will provide for the ability of Purchase College to finally begin to develop a senior learning community. This is a win win for our students, faculty and the community," said SUNY Purchase President Thomas Schwartz.

“I have been working closely with University administrators for many, many years to bring this innovative public-private partnership approach to SUNY, “ said Senator Oppenheimer. “The senior learning community was eagerly sought by both University officials and seniors who came to me for assistance in getting this legislation passed.”

Westchester County homeowners will have the opportunity to meet with mortgage foreclosure specialists from the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) on August 3rd in White Plains. The Department’s Mobile Command Center will be available to assist homeowners already in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure from 11 AM to 7 PM, and will be located at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Martine Avenue, in front of the Westchester County Clerk's Office.
