Legislature Passes Oppenheimer Smart Growth Bill

Legislation combats sprawl and promotes environmentally sound infrastructure development 

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce passage of her bill, the State Smart Growth and Infrastructure Policy Act (S.5560B/A.8011B), which will combat modern development practices that have contributed to urban and suburban sprawl.  The legislation passed both houses of the legislature last week and will now be sent to the Governor for his consideration.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Stands with Women's Advocacy Groups to Urge Governor Paterson to Enact New Protections for Domestic Violence Survivors

While violent crime overall has declined in recent years, violence against loved ones is on the rise.  In 2008, intimate partner homicides increased 25% statewide and 45% in counties outside New York City.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), joined by representatives from the Pace Women’s Justice Center, My Sisters’ Place, Hope’s Door and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, today called on Governor Paterson to sign into law sweeping legislation to strengthen the rights and protections of domestic violence survivors and increase the criminal penalties for domestic abuse.

Oppenheimer Smart Growth Bill Becomes Law

Governor signs bill to combat sprawl and promote environmentally sound development

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce that her bill, the State Smart Growth and Infrastructure Policy Act (S.5560B/A.8011B) was signed into law on August 30, 2010.  The new law establishes state smart growth infrastructure criteria and requires state agencies to review and consider these guidelines when allocating funds for public infrastructure projects.

Mayor Feinstein Announces New Revenue Source to Lessen Property Tax Burden on Residents and Businesses

 

Joined by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) and Assemblyman George Latimer (D-Rye), Mayor Joan Feinstein today announced passage of legislation that will allow the Village of Rye Brook to alleviate the property tax burden on businesses and families through a new revenue source – an occupancy charge on Rye Brook hotel rooms.

While property taxes have reached a breaking point in Westchester County, community needs for police, fire, sanitation and other local services, as well as infrastructure maintenance, remain essential.  Faced with declining state aid resulting from the economic downturn, villages, towns and municipalities have urgently sought alternatives to local property taxes to raise much needed revenues.
