Oppenheimer Small Business Forum Highlights Role of Social Media in Marketing Small Businesses

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) and the Women’s Enterprise Development Center (WEDC) hosted a successful Small Business & Economic Development Forum on Tuesday, October 23rd at the White Plains Public Library.  This was the Senator’s 21st small business conference, which has been co-sponsored for a number of years by WEDC with the generous support of Capital One Bank.

A capacity crowd filled the library auditorium to hear keynote speaker, Kris Ruby, President and Founder of Ruby Media Group, a premiere full service Public Relations and Social Media agency, discuss the state of social media and small business in today’s digital age. In a talk punctuated by sound, practical advice, Ms. Ruby encouraged small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to incorporate social media into their overall marketing and communications strategies.  As a first step, small business owners should identify their objectives in using social media, whether it be to increase sales, improve customer service, increase traffic on the company’s website, public relations or search engine optimization.

FEMA Opens Storm Recovery Center In Westchester

The Federal Emergency Management Center (FEMA) has opened a multipurpose recovery center for individuals and businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.  The Center will operate from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm, seven days a week until further notice.

FEMA representatives will assist individuals, households and businesses apply for financial aid for losses and damages related to the storm.  In addition, staff from the Small Buiness Administration will be on hand to help businesses apply for low-interest loans for storm-related repairs.  In addition, representatives from Con Edison will be present to answer customer questions about outages and restorations.  A number of social service agencies will also help staff the center, providing residents with counseling and other recovery assistance.

Oppenheimer Teams with Cuomo Administration to Help Families Facing Foreclosure in Westchester

Westchester County homeowners will have the opportunity to meet with mortgage foreclosure specialists from the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) on August 3rd  in White Plains. The Department’s Mobile Command Center will be available to assist homeowners already in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure from 11 AM to 7 PM, and will be located at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Martine Avenue, in front of the Westchester County Clerk's Office.

Oppenheimer Announces Summer Reading Partnership between NYS Senate and State Public Libraries and Urges Students to Keep Reading

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce a partnership between the New York State Senate and the New York State Library in support of summer reading for children and families across New York State. The Senate’s 2012 Summer Reading Program and the New York State Library’s 2012 Summer Reading at New York Libraries will establish a strong initiative that encourages students to reinforce the knowledge they gain during the school year.

“As students throughout the state enjoy their school vacations, I strongly encourage them to take advantage of their public libraries this summer,” said Senator Oppenheimer. “Research shows active summer reading is the best way to avoid the learning losses that are typical of summer break.”

Oppenheimer Hails Assembly Passage of Bill Increasing Minimum Wage and Calls on Senate to do the Same

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today applauded recent passage in the Assembly of a bill, A.9148, to increase the State’s minimum wage and called on her Senate colleagues to do the same. 

“This is a matter of economic fairness,” said Senator Oppenheimer. “Throughout New York, hardworking men and women are struggling to make ends meet under our woefully inadequate minimum wage laws.  Working class New Yorkers deserve to be paid a decent wage that will allow them to provide for their families’ needs.”

Oppenheimer Names Reina Schiffrin 2012 Woman of Distinction

At a ceremony held in Albany  on May 15th, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) paid tribute to Reina Schiffrin, naming her a 2012 Woman of Distinction.  Ms. Schiffrin is the President/CEO of Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP).

As one of the most senior women in the Senate, Senator Oppenheimer welcomed the honorees at the 2012 Women of Distinction ceremony:  “Tonight we honor outstanding women who make our world and our lives better.  With us today are individuals of remarkable character.  They have demonstrated initiative and commitment in the pursuit of higher goals for themselves, as well as acting as role models for all women.”

Edward T. Dempsey

Sergeant Edward “Ed” Dempsey has led an exemplary life both in the Armed Forces and in the community. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he volunteered to fight for his county in World War II. Assigned to the Fire Brigade, Ed battled fires on airfields and Army bases. Although he longed to be transferred to gunnery school, the Army sought to capitalize on his aptitude for mechanics, teaching him to build, maintain and repair B-25s. Sergeant Dempsey worked on bombers on several Army bases and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Reina Schiffrin is president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP), the 16th largest affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, with 12 health centers in Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties. In 2011, PPHP provided services to over 30,000 patients, conducted education programs reaching over 26,000 youth and adults, and mobilized over 15,000 advocates. PPHP has served the community for 79 years, and is dedicated to educating and empowering individuals to make responsible choices regarding their sexuality and sexual health.

Oppenheimer Applauds Senate Passage of Bill to Evaluate Early Childhood Education

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce Senate passage of S.5650-C, a bill aimed at strengthening the New York State daycare system by focusing on early childhood education in daycare settings. The bill directs the Commissioner of the NYS Department of Education (SED) to examine and make recommendations on early education in a variety of child care settings.

“I am a firm believer that the door to education opens long before kindergarten,” said Senator Oppenheimer. “All of our children deserve the chance to learn and prosper, and daycare can be an ideal place for educating our young children, as well as keeping them safe.”

Oppenheimer Urges All Women to Get a Mammogram this Mother's Day

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today urged all women to give themselves the gift of peace of mind this Mother’s Day by scheduling an appointment for a mammogram. Along with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, the Senator is promoting getting tested for breast cancer in their annual Mother’s Day mammography campaign.

“Mammograms are so important because they offer the greatest opportunity for early detection and a full recovery,” stated the Senator. “And since 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal, there is no reason to fear or avoid being tested.”
