Oppenheimer Applauds Citizens' Efforts to Protect Long Island Sound

Under threatening skies, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) joined with Sound Shore residents and public officials this week at a Harbor Island event unveiling the SoundVision Action Plan developed by the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Long Island Sound (CAC) and Save the Sound.

The Senator expressed her support for the 26-page plan, which sets forth specific action steps to protect clean water, create a safe haven for wildlife, build environmentally sound communities and invest in projects to preserve, restore and enjoy the Sound.

Oppenheimer Celebrates Marriage Equality

          Marking the historic passage of the marriage equality law, Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) was honored to attend the recent wedding of Chris Fraley and Victor Self.  Surrounded by family and friends, Fraley and Self exchanged vows on Sunday afternoon in Rye, becoming one of the first couples in Westchester County to marry under the new law.

Oppenheimer and Galef Applaud Cuomo's Signing of Local Court Consolidation Bill

Today, Governor Cuomo signed a bill (Chapter 146) that allows for a new, more efficient court system to begin in Ossining. Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer, have championed the bill, which permits the consolidation of the Town and Village of Ossining courts to serve the municipalities as one, while improving court efficiency and saving taxpayer dollars.

Oppenheimer Hails Passage of "Complete Streets" Bill

Bill is Companion to Oppenheimer’s Smart Growth Legislation Enacted Last Year

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce that the Senate and Assembly earlier this week passed the “Complete Streets” bill, S. 5411A, which will make New York roadways safer for all who use them.  The legislation requires state and local agencies to utilize complete street design principles in evaluating roadway improvements.  Oppenheimer is a co-sponsor and key supporter of the legislation.  “Complete Streets” is the companion bill to the Senator’s Smart Growth Public Infrastructure legislation, which was signed into law last year.

Legislature Authorizes SUNY Purchase to Build Senior Learning Community

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer is pleased to announce legislative passage of her bill, S. 1846A, which would allow SUNY Purchase to lease land for the development of a senior residential learning center on campus.  The senior facility would be operated by the Purchase College Advancement Corporation, a not-for-profit corporation.

University officials and interested seniors have long advocated for a residential learning community for seniors and sought legislators help in approving this public-private partnership.

“We are extremely grateful to Senator Oppenheimer and the NYS Senate for passage of the bill, which will provide for the ability of Purchase College to finally begin to develop a senior learning community. This is a win win for our students, faculty and the community," said SUNY Purchase President Thomas Schwartz.

Senator Oppenheimer honors Lindsay Farrell, Open Door President and CEO, as 2011 Woman of Distinction

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) has named Lindsay Farrell, President and CEO of the Open Door Family Medical Centers, a 2011 New York State Woman of Distinction.  Each year, the NY Senate honors a select group of outstanding women who have enriched the quality of life in our communities and our state.

In her opening remarks at the public ceremony held recently in the State Capitol, Senator Oppenheimer praised Farrell for her “tireless efforts in making quality, affordable health care a reality for economically disadvantaged residents of Westchester County.  Her dedication and vision has quite literally ‘opened the door’ to  a brighter, healthier future for countless children and families.”

Schoolchildren thank Senator Oppenheimer for securing grant to improve traffic and pedestrian safety along school routes

NYS Senator Suzi Oppenheimer visited the Murray Ave. Elementary Schoolin Larchmont to celebrate the recent NYS grant that she helped securefor the Rye YMCA's Safe Routes to School program.  The $5000 grantwill help fund school traffic and pedestrian safety initiatives inRye, Rye Neck, Harrison, Larchmont and Mamaroneck schools.

William Capodanno

Sergeant William “Bill” Capodanno is a World War II, U.S. Army combat veteran who served in the Pacific Theater from January 1941 to January 1946.  He is the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.  Bill has been an active member of the VFW for 65 years, and a resident of Larchmont since 1952.  He owned and operated a local roofing business, Village Roofing, in the community for many years.  Bill served as the commander of VFW Post 1156 for 15 out of the more than 50 years that he has been a member of that post, and has held various other offices in VFW Post 1156 for many years.  He also held numerous VFW County and NYS positions over the last 65 years.

Senate Passes Broad Legislative Package to Enhance Traffic Safety and Save Lives

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce Senate passage of a package of bills aimed at making the roads safer for pedestrians and motorists across the State.  The six-bill package increases vehicular safety measures, while strengthening the penalties for those who violate traffic safety laws. 

These include a measure that would establish texting while driving as a primary offense, allowing police officers to stop and issue a summons for unlawful texting. (S.998B). Under current law, a motorist can only be ticketed for texting while driving if he or she has already been stopped for another traffic violation.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D- Mamaroneck) today announced that the awarding of several public library construction grants in her Senate district.  The grant funds are from $14 million in capital funds that were made available for public library construction in the 2010 State Budget.

The Mamaroneck Public Library was awarded $101,008 to improve library access and services and to complete construction of new library and children’s room spaces.  The New Rochelle Public Library has been awarded a $50,000 grant to repurpose existing space for a teen area in the library and for new fixtures that will create energy costs savings. The Rye Free Reading Room was awarded $100,000 for a reconfiguration of library space to create new Biography and Teen spaces, with fire system, electrical, cabling and computer improvements, as well as furnishing for the newly reconfigured spaces.  The Scarsdale Public Library was given a $111,280 grant for much needed building improvements and a multi-zone rooftop HVAC system that will boost library productivity and increase energy efficiency.

Lindsay Farrell

Lindsay Farrell was appointed President and CEO by the Board of Directors in October 1998. Since that time, Open Door Family Medical Centers has grown significantly adding sites, programs and technologies to more than double the number of low-income people served. Home-grown at Open Door where she volunteered initially and has worked since 1986, Ms. Farrell has been Open Door’s Director of Operations and Director of Development. As Director of  Development, she was responsible for capital fund drives for major facility expansions. Today, Open Door is also recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home and has won the prestigious Davies Award for community health from the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society.
