New Law Honors Teen Who Died of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

AMANDA’S LAW REQUIRING THE INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS GOES INTO EFFECT IN NEW YORK           Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce enactment of a new law to protect families from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Known as the “silent” killer, carbon monoxide – which can neither be seen nor smelled -- is responsible for the deaths of more than 500 people each year.

Senator Oppenheimer Announces Free Tax Preperation Sites to Assist Wage Earners in Determining Eligibility for Earned Income Tax Credit

                     Many Taxpayers May Overlook Valuable Tax Credit     In today’s difficult economy, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can make life a little easier for workers and their families struggling to make ends meet.  Yet, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) estimates that one in four eligible taxpayers could miss out on this valuable tax credit because they aren’t aware that they qualify.

Educators Hail Senator Oppeneheimer's Efforts ot Provide School Districts Mandate Relief and Increased Flexibility to Manage Costs

     Acknowledging the difficult economic circumstances facing schools throughout the State, the Senate Education Committee, chaired by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer, today took decisive action to assist school districts in meeting their considerable fiscal challenges.  The Committee acted favorably on several bills that are part of Senator Oppenheimer’s reform agenda to provide mandate relief and afford greater flexibility to school districts to manage expenses and achieve cost savings.

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer and Assemblyman George Latimer co-host the recent Continuing Care Leadership Coalition Westchester Town Hall Forum

SENATOR OPPENHEIMER CO-HOSTS WESTCHESTER TOWN HALL FORUM ON LONG-TERM HEALTH CARE SERVICES

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) co-hosted with Assemblyman George Latimer a Westchester town hall forum addressing state funding for long-term health care services.  The forum, which was organized by the Continuing Care Leadership Coalition (CCLC), was held on January 15, 2010 at the United Hebrew Geriatric Center in New Rochelle.

2009 Annual Report of the Senate Education Committee

The 2009 Education Committee Report documents the activities of the Committee for the 2009 legislative session.  In order to create a cover for the report, Senator Oppenheimer sponsored an art contest for children in first through third grade, within her district.  One winner was chosen for the cover and five runners-up were chosen to be included within the report.  Senator Oppenheimer wishes to thank all of the children who entered the contest, as well as their art teachers.  Congratulations to Gustavo Morales, of the Trinity Elementary School in New Rochelle,
