Race to the Top Legislation Highlights the Benefits of Consensus Approach

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer Announces National Foundation for Women Legislators' Essay Contest

Seven female high school junior and senior students will win an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) annual conference and receive a $3,000 college scholarship. Applicants must write an essay addressing this year’s topic, “Freedom and Civic Virtues,” which calls upon students to describe how moral principles and the United States Bill of Rights shape the role of young adults in civic engagement.

NYS Senate Westchester Delegation to Hold Hearings on Executive Budget for 2010-11

 

In an effort to more effectively advocate for the needs and concerns of their constituents, the five New York senators representing Westchester County will convene a public hearing to assess the priorities and impacts of Governor Paterson’s proposed SFY 2010-2011 budget on the residents, communities, organizations and elected officials of Westchester.  Senator Suzi Oppenheimer chairs the Westchester Senate delegation, which includes Senators Ruth Hassell-Thompson, Jeff Klein, Vincent Leibell, and Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

AMANDA’S LAW REQUIRING THE INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS GOES INTO EFFECT IN NEW YORK           Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) is pleased to announce enactment of a new law to protect families from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Known as the “silent” killer, carbon monoxide – which can neither be seen nor smelled -- is responsible for the deaths of more than 500 people each year.

The Senate Education Committee, chaired by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), held the first of three public hearings exploring how the delivery of shared services through Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) or related entities might be expanded to create greater efficiencies and lead to further taxpayer savings.  The hearing took place on October 2, 2009 at the Western Suffolk BOCES Conference Center in Wheatley Heights, New York.  It was attended by representatives of BOCES, school districts, unions and governmental organizations.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month- Senator Oppenheimer is Living Proof that Early Detection is Key to Breast Cancer Survival

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) reminds New Yorkers that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and marks this occasion by urging all women to schedule their annual mammogram.

Medical professionals recommend that women receive a clinical breast exam beginning at age 20 and thereafter a minimum of once every three years until the age of 40. Women over 40 should undergo clinical breast exams every year.
