Governor Approves Legislation Authorizing the Cities of New Rochelle, Rye, and White Plains to Raise Revenues through Hotel Occupancy Taxes

 

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) announced that legislation to authorize the cities of New Rochelle and White Plains to impose hotel room occupancy taxes was passed by the Senate and signed into law by Governor Paterson.  The Governor also approved legislation extending the City of Rye’s authority to impose its own hotel occupancy tax.

Senator Oppenheimer Promotes Educational Enhancement Through Legislative Grants to Schools and Libraries

Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today announced that she will provide legislative grants to school districts and libraries throughout her district.  Each school district in her Senate district will receive $100,000 for educational enhancement, while each library district will receive $50,000 for the purchase of educational materials.

Senator Oppenheimer Introduces Legislation to Ease Mandates on Schools

 

State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today announced the introduction of several bills aimed at providing much needed mandate relief for local school districts. The trio of legislative proposals would eliminate unnecessary and often duplicative reporting requirements, allow for greater consolidation and sharing of services between school districts, and provide a five year exemption from Wicks Law requirements for school construction projects.

SENATOR OPPENHEIMER VOTES TO PROVIDE NEW YORKERS 13 WEEKS OF EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

Bill is Expected to Head to the Floor for Vote by Full Senate This Week

 Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, voted to approve legislation (S. 4110-A) that would permit New York to receive more than $600 million in federal stimulus funds for unemployment assistance.  As part of this bill, an additional 13 weeks of extended unemployment benefits will be provided to New Yorkers already receiving aid, while additional funding will be made available for benefits to newly unemployed workers.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Hoping to bring better awareness to new breakthroughs associated with detecting ovarian cancer, State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer (D-Mamaroneck) today noted that New Yorkers need to learn more about the symptoms of early disease. She said ovarian cancer used to be called the ‘silent killer’ because it rarely revealed symptoms in its earliest, most treatable stages. But ovarian cancer is silent no more.
