“Yesterday’s referendum to repeal Maine’s marriage equality law was a blow to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, and indeed all those who believe in fairness and equality under the law. As in every struggle for civil rights, defeats are temporary – and so shall be this repeal in Maine.
Thursday was another late night at the Capitol for the Senate Democrats, but perhaps it wasn’t too late for a little payback, the DN's Glenn Blain reports.
Sen. Tom Duane, a Manhattan Democrat, cast the only negative vote against the so-called "Nixzmary Brown bill", which authorizes life sentences without parole for people who kill children in a “cruel and wanton manner.”
"Today’s vote against Marriage Equality makes me very angry. Promises made were not honored. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, and all fair minded New Yorkers, have been betrayed. I am enraged, deeply disappointed and profoundly saddened by the vote today.
