Senator Duane delivers remarks at a town hall meeting regarding St. Vincent's Hospital at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in the West Village on January 28th.
"As I told hundreds of stakeholders who turned out on January 28 for SEIU 1199’s St. Vincent’s Community Town Hall Meeting, we need St. Vincent’s Hospital. We need a full-service hospital and health care facility in this neighborhood and on the lower West Side of Manhattan. We need the care that St. Vincent’s provides for the people that no one else wants to treat.
“Residents of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village (ST/PCV) and all who care about the future of this bastion of affordable middle-class housing in New York City are understandably concerned about the news that the complex will be turned over to its creditors.
The stakes for federal health care reform are high. I am a strong believer that we must rethink the way we provide health insurance so that it is available and affordable for all Americans. As the House and Senate continue to resolve differences between their bills, here are three issues of paramount concern to New York:
“While not unexpected, it is sad and a cause of great concern that Tishman Speyer and Blackrock will miss a payment today on debt from their 2006 purchase of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village (ST-PCV). “Yesterday’s referendum to repeal Maine’s marriage equality law was a blow to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, and indeed all those who believe in fairness and equality under the law. As in every struggle for civil rights, defeats are temporary – and so shall be this repeal in Maine.
"In fighting on behalf of tenants, I have long argued that under New York State law, landlords who receive New York City tax abatements for renovations must extend rent stabilization protections to their tenants during the abatement period.I am gratified that the New York State Court of Appeals, in upholding the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division ruling in Roberts v. Tishman Speyer Properties, L.P., has affirmed it.
"From the time Hiram Monserrate was arrested on domestic violence charges last December, I have been outspoken in my disgust and horror at his actions, and at the sad but true fact that he continued to serve in the New York State Senate. As I said privately and publicly in the Senate Democratic Conference, indeed to Senators on both sides of the aisle, and publicly at my District-wide Town Hall Meeting and elsewhere, I am appalled to serve with him and I believe Mr.
On August 12th, Senator Duane spoke with Mike Pesca on WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show about his report on impending school overcrowding in Clinton-Hell's Kitchen as well as the 2009 Legislative Session and the prospects for his same-sex marriage bill and other legislation.
