Area counties in line for emergency response funding

Elmira, N.Y., October 17—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said that each of the counties he represents as part of New York’s 58th Senate District will receive public safety grants as part of a new package of $10 million in statewide funding to support local emergency response operations.

The grants are administered by the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and go to support localities that operate 9-1-1 response and emergency service dispatch operations.

O'Mara: Key planks of Senate's 'Young Farmers NY' strategy take effect, new grant fund and college loan forgiveness

Elmira, N.Y., October 14—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said today that two key provisions of a comprehensive “Young Farmers NY” program that he and his Senate colleagues unveiled earlier this year, which were enacted as part of the 2014-15 state budget, are now in effect.

The “Young Farmers NY” strategy, which O’Mara co-sponsored, combined financial and educational initiatives and incentives aimed at keeping New York State’s leading industry competitive for the next generation.

The latest meth warning from the State Police: 'Meth danger along highways in NY'

From Gannett News, October 10, 2014: "Amateur chemists synthesizing methamphetamine are creating more than just the potent final product craved by addicts seeking their next frenzied high.

Along with the purified formulation of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen that makes up the drug known as meth or speed, the manufacturing process involves noxious precursors and remnants that all too often get littered across roadways and open spaces across New York state, creating dangers and expenses borne by the public.

September 30th 'Community Leadership Forum on Heroin Prevention' in Yates County ~ Open to the public, find out more here

A "Community Leadership Forum on Heroin Prevention" is scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Penn Yan Academy Auditorium.  

Tuesday's forum has been organized by the Yates County Substance Abuse Coalition and will feature several guest speakers including Yates County Sheriff Ronald Spike.

The public is invited to attend.

Hopes for newly opened rail line to spur job growth at Steuben County Industrial Park

"Local officials are hoping a recently completed railroad line will help spur development at the long-vacant Steuben County Industrial Park. The ribbon was cut Thursday on a $909,473 project to bring a short branch to the industrial park off the B&H Railroad, which runs from the Norfolk Southern line in Painted Post up to Wayland."

Ceremony this morning to rename Corning Post Office in honor of fallen local hero (UPDATED)

From The Leader, "The U.S. Post Office on the city’s Northside will be formally be renamed Thursday morning in honor of Army Spc. Ryan P. Jayne, an East High graduate killed in 2012 while serving in Afghanistan."

Steuben County drug tip line leads to another meth lab bust ~ Read more

It's been a constant topic on these pages over the past several years: the resurgence of meth across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions.  Meth's rise has been accompanied more recently by a resurgence of heroin abuse. 

We've stressed that it's going to take a multi-pronged approach to combat the spread of these drugs, one that includes tougher laws and law enforcement, prevention and treatment, and, equally important, heightened community awareness and education.

Business Council gives O'Mara high grade on 2013-14 legislative rankings

Albany, N.Y., September 17—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has received a strong vote of confidence from the state’s largest business advocacy organization, The Business Council of New York State, for his commitment to a legislative agenda focused on “economic growth, good jobs and strong communities.”  

O’Mara’s 89% score is the third-highest ranking in the Senate.

Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council highlights its next round of priorities at the Capitol today ~ Watch the presentation live beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The state's 10 Regional Economic Development Councils (REDC) are making their presentations for Round IV funding to the state's assessment team this week in Albany.

The Finger Lakes REDC made its presentation yesterday. Read more HERE.
