Safety reminders are being issued by various local, federal and state agencies as 90-plus degree temperatures are expected across New York State.  

From the Ithaca Journal: "With hot, sunny days finally on the forecast this week, be careful of leaving pets in the car, even for just a few minutes. On an 80 or 90-degree day, in just 10 minutes, the temperature can rise over 100 degrees in a car. Cracking the window often doesn’t make much of a difference..."

'Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council eyes $500M prize' ~ Also seeks public input on a proposed strategy to create jobs, economic growth, other opportunities across the Southern Tier region

The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) has outlined its strategy to secure $500 million in state economic development funding that will be awarded later this year.

Emergency preparedness training program set for July 18th in Schuyler County ~ Online registration required ~ Find out more

Watkins Glen, N.Y., July 8—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano today reminded area residents that they can register online for a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” that will be held at the Watkins Glen Central High School on Saturday, July 18,  2015.

O’Mara and Palmesano are sponsoring the Schuyler County program together with County Legislature Chairman Dennis Fagan and Watkins Glen Mayor Sam Schimizzi.

New 'Bus Buddies' initiative underway in Steuben County to engage and mobilize new riders of public transportation ~ Find additional details here ~ Senator O'Mara has highlighted critical importance of public transportation in rural, Upstate counties

News from the Institute for Human Services, Inc. (IHS) that a new program is underway in Steuben County to "engage, mobilize, and empower new riders of public transportation."

According to a recent news release from the IHS, "Transportation continues to remain a principal issue in Steuben County. Many seniors and persons with disabilities - the very people public transportation can benefit most - are intimidated by the public transportation system. To address this need, Steuben Coordinated Transportation Mobility Management, in collaboration with Steuben County RSVP, has launched a new program called Bus Buddies."

State announces start of grant program to help localities with critical drinking water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects ~ Read more and access applications ~ O'Mara says program good for local environments, economies, and taxpayers

Albany, N.Y., July 2--State Senator Tom O'Mara (R,I,C-Big Flats) today highlighted an announcement by the state Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) and Department of Health (DOH) that $50 million in water infrastructure grants is now available to local governments for assistance in undertaking critical drinking water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. 

In total over the next three years, $200 million in grants will become available to local governments under the new "Water Infrastructure Improvement Act."

'Heroin issues examined at Ithaca forum' ~ Event draws a standing-room only crowd to hear about the heroin issue ~ Senator O'Mara praises grassroots efforts to raise public awareness, points to ongoing efforts of Senate Task Force on Heroin

A standing-room-only crowd heard about the overwhelming issue of heroin in the Ithaca community during a presentation Monday evening at the Tompkins County Public Library.

"By far and wide, heroin is probably the worst drug on the street that we have here in Ithaca," Ithaca Police Investigator Kevin McKenna told the gathering.
