Leading small business group gives O'Mara 100% rating on legislative scorecard

Albany, N.Y., September 14—New York’s leading small business association, the National Federation of Independent Business of New York (NFIB/NY), today gave State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) a 100% rating on its two-year review of the State Legislature.

O’Mara was one of 11 state senators who received a grade of 100 on the organization’s review of state legislative actions during the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions that were identified as priority issues by small business owners across New York.

Hornell Chamber awarded grant to help continue on-the-job-training program for tri-county workers, businesses

Albany, N.Y., September 12—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C, Corning) joined Hornell Area Chamber of Commerce President James Griffin to announce that the chamber has received a $107,140 state grant to continue a valuable on-the-job-training and placement program aimed at assisting the economically disadvantaged, veterans, displaced workers and the unemployed and underemployed throughout Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties.

O’Mara and Palmesano helped secure the state funding in the 2012-2013 New York State budget.  The grant is administered through the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and the state Labor Department.

Eleven years after September 11, 2001, Americans of all ages continue to gather, in the words of former President George W. Bush, to “honor the memory of the 11th day.”

From west to east, from north to south, Americans do their duty as citizens to remember, like we always have, and like we always will.

For this generation, there was never a more powerful time to be an American.  To this very day, while September 11th evokes such a difficult mix of emotions, one of the most powerful feelings of all remains this one: we are Americans and above all else, in the toughest of times, we will stand together in aid, in comfort, and in resolve.

Unshackle Upstate releases 2012 Legislative Scorecard, Senator O'Mara receives high grade

Albany, N.Y.,August 30—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has received one of the Senate’s highest grades, 93%, from Unshackle Upstate on the group’s 2012 Legislative Scorecard.

Unshackle Upstate is a pro-jobs, pro-taxpayer advocacy organization comprised of business and trade organizations representing every Upstate region. 

The guide ranks the voting record of every state legislator on pieces of legislation the Legislature considered in 2012 that reflect the organization’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, pro-taxpayer initiatives and private-sector economic growth.

State, local officials highlight benefits of Route 15 bridge project in Steuben County

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald announced today that construction is under way on a $31 million project that will build six bridges on Route 15 in the Town of Lindley, Steuben County. This is the second and final phase of a project that will complete the final five-mile stretch of future Interstate 99, connecting Corning, N.Y., to Williamsport, Pa.

NYSDOT Assistant Commissioner Rod Sechrist and Acting Regional Director Brian Kelly joined with state and local officials this morning at the project site along the future interstate highway, to celebrate the start of this final phase of the project.

Anti-telemarketer legislation signed into law

Albany, N.Y., August 17—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today applauded Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signing of a new law to implement stronger protections for New Yorkers from intrusive or unwanted telemarketing practices.

O’Mara strongly supported and voted in favor of the legislation (S7567), which was given final legislative approval by the Senate in mid-June.  The new law will regulate all telemarketers who do business in New York, wherever they may be located, and add new consumer protections from unwelcome prerecorded calls, known as robocalls, from telemarketers.

Albany, N.Y., August 15—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, today praised New York’s first-ever “Yogurt Summit” and applauded the Cuomo administration for its ongoing efforts to strengthen key state industries, including agriculture, and create jobs and other economic opportunities by easing the state’s regulatory burden, encouraging public-private partnerships and other actions.

O'Mara issues reminder that 2012-13 hunting and fishing licenses now on sale

Albany, N.Y., August 14—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area sportsmen and sportswomen today that 2012-2013 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, and Deer Management Permits (DMPs), are now on sale at 1,500 license outlets statewide.

'Sgt. Devin A. Snyder Memorial Highway' pays tribute to fallen local hero

Cohocton, N.Y.—On Tuesday, August 7, 2012, the family and friends of the late U.S. Army Sergeant Devin A. Snyder of Cohocton joined state and local leaders and area veterans at a ceremony to officially designate a portion of I-390 in Steuben County  as the “Sergeant Devin A. Snyder Memorial Highway.”  

The late afternoon ceremony was held at the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area on Atlanta Back Road in Cohocton and featured the unveiling of the new state Department of Transportation (DOT) signs designating the stretch of I-390 between Exit 2 in the town of Cohocton (northbound) to Exit 3 in the town of Wayland (southbound) as the “Sergeant Devin A. Snyder Memorial Highway.”

Expansion of state's DNA databank goes into effect

Albany, N.Y., August 2—New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that the groundbreaking law expanding New York State's DNA databank by requiring anyone convicted of any felony or Penal Law misdemeanor to provide a DNA sample is now effective.

State Senator Tom O'Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said that the State Legislature gave final approval to the expansion and it was signed into law by the governor earlier this year.  The expansion of the state's DNA databank is a move that law enforcement leaders locally and across New York State have called an essential modern-day crime-fighting tool.
