Senate approves 'New Jobs-NY'

Albany, N.Y., May 30 —The New York State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to enact a comprehensive economic development program called “New Jobs-NY.”

The Senate approved the measure by a vote of 57 to 1.

Senator O'Mara honors Watkins Glen woman as one of Senate's 2012 'Women of Distinction'

Albany, N.Y., May 15—In Albany Tuesday, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and his Senate colleagues paid tribute to Virginia Houseknecht of Watkins Glen, a long-time Cornell Cooperative Extension educator and leader in Schuyler County, and founder of the Southern Tier Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, as a 2012 “Woman of Distinction.”

Senator O'Mara pays tribute to Yates County senior volunteers

Albany, N.Y., May 8—New York State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats)  welcomed John Moeller of Penn Yan and William “Bill” Wormuth, Sr. of Penn Yan to the State Capitol today as part of a Senior Citizens’ Day 2012 event in Albany sponsored by the New York State Office for the Aging.

According to the state Office for the Aging, Senior Citizens' Day is celebrated in New York in conjunction with events across the nation during May to observe Older American's Month. Today’s event seeks to acknowledge the significant contributions made by older New Yorkers to their communities. This year's event theme was "Honoring Those Who Help Others and Empower Their Communities."

Chemung County woman named 'Senior Citizen of the Year' during statewide tribute to senior volunteers

Albany, N.Y., May 8—New York State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) today presented a New York State “Senior Citizen of the Year Award” to Mary Beechey of Big Flats during a Senior Citizens’ Day 2012 event in Albany sponsored by the New York State Office for the Aging.

[In the photo above, Mrs. Beechey is presented her New York State “Senior Citizen of the Year” award by Senator O’Mara and Assemblyman Friend in the ceremonial Blue Room at the State Capitol.]

Watkins Glen High School selected as one of 5 finalists in nationwide shoe design contest -- Congratulations!

A few days ago, I was glad to help spread the word that art students from Watkins Glen High School were Northeast regional finalists in a nationwide “Custom Culture” shoe design contest sponsored by Vans.

Now I'm truly glad to be able to say that Watkins Glen has been chosen as one of the 5 national finalists and will now go on to compete for the $50,000 Grand Prize.  According to the Vans website: “"These five schools will be flown out to Los Angeles and on May 30th, the grand prize will be awarded to one lucky winner at the Long Beach Museum of Art."

ReCharge NY economic development power allocations announced for local manufacturers, businesses

State Senator Tom O'Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, said today that a number of leading businesses and manufacturers from throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions are among more than 500 organizations statewide being awarded low-cost economic development power allocations under the first round of the ReCharge New York (RNY) program.

RNY, a major statewide initiative for retaining and creating jobs and spurring capital investments, was approved by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo last year.  O'Mara co-sponsored and strongly supported the program's creation.
