'Economic Forum speakers say NY needs to get out of way' ~ At Chemung County Chamber event, mood 'upbeat but tempered' on outlook for local economy

"The Southern Tier is poised for a major economic comeback in the next five to 10 years, according to speakers at Thursday's annual economic forum in Elmira.  The biggest stumbling block to that recovery is New York state and its tax and economic policies, those same speakers believe."

Today, February 3, 2015, marks the 20th Anniversary of the historic space shuttle mission of Eileen M. Collins, a native of Elmira. 

On February 3, 1995, Eileen Collins became the first American woman to pilot a space shuttle, the Discovery.

'Dundee names Miller firefighter of the year'

DUNDEE--Past Dundee fire chief Ray Miller was named the department's Firefighter of the Year during their annual awards banquet Friday, Jan. 23. More than 80 people attended the banquet, which took place inside the Dundee Fire Hall. Miller was recognized for his 60 years of active service in the department.

Cuomo pits Upstate regions against each other in competition for economic development aid ~ O'Mara, others say much more needs to be done to turn around Upstate

In Rochester yesterday, Governor Cuomo announced an Upstate economic development competition that will pit seven Upstate regions against each other.  Under the governor's plan, three regions will ultimately share $1.5 billion in state assistance.

Senator O'Mara and other local and statewide leaders expressed some reservations in response to the Cuomo plan and pointed to the need to do much more to turn around the Upstate economy.
