Local municipalities see boost in state support for local roads, bridges

Elmira, N.Y., April 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) said today that area counties, cities, towns and villages will receive increases in state funding for local roads and bridges under the recently enacted 2014-15 New York State budget.

Area state legislators continue to sponsor legislation to encourage emergency services volunteers

Elmira, N.Y., April 10—As the nation observes National Volunteer Week this week,  State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R,C,I-Big Flats) said today that they are continuing to sponsor legislation aimed at helping localities recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and other emergency services personnel.

O'Mara, Palmesano say new state budget continues last year's increased state support for local roads and bridges, provides additional help for winter-damaged roads

Albany, N.Y., March 31—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C, Corning) said today that area counties will see increases in state Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funding under the 2014-15 New York State budget being enacted today.

O'Mara, Palmesano and Friend continue to criticize Cuomo administration decision to close Monterey Shock

Albany, N.Y., March 31—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) and Assemblyman Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) today criticized Governor Andrew Cuomo for refusing to renegotiate his administration’s plan to close the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility later this year.

The final 2014-15 state budget agreed upon by Cuomo and legislative leaders, and being acted on today by both the Senate and Assembly, does not contain funding to keep Monterey open.

O'Mara says new state budget includes beginnings of Senate's 'Young Farmers NY' strategy

Albany, N.Y., March 31—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said today that the 2014-15 state budget will include key provisions of a comprehensive “Young Farmers NY” program he and his Senate colleagues unveiled earlier this year.

The “Young Farmers NY” strategy, which O’Mara co-sponsors, combines financial and educational initiatives and incentives aimed at keeping New York State’s leading industry competitive for the next generation.

O'Mara on budget highs (and lows): Important tax cuts and beginning of 'Young Farmers NY' strategy, but falling short on mandate relief and saving Monterey

Albany, N.Y., March 31—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) said today that highlights of the final 2014-15 New York State budget include key tax cuts for upstate manufacturers and keeping state spending growth under two percent for the fourth consecutive year.

O’Mara also praised the budget for including key provisions of a “Young Farmers NY” strategy he  co-sponsors in the Senate that was unveiled earlier this year.

O'Mara reminds area residents: Sign up now for emergency preparedness training program at Cornell University on Saturday, March 29th

Albany, N.Y., March 25-State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” will be held at Cornell University on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

The program is free of charge but participants must complete an online registration prior to the event.  According to the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo, registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Senate approves 'Jobs for Heroes' program to assist disabled veterans

Albany, N.Y., March 24—Last year Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State Legislature enacted a Hire-a-Vet tax credit to encourage businesses in New York State to hire returning veterans.

Today, the New York State Senate unanimously approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) known as the “Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business Act” to build on last year’s tax credit and further assist New York State businesses owned by service-connected disabled veterans.

O'Mara: Survey findings highlight need to address tax and regulatory challenges facing New York's manufacturers

Albany, N.Y., March 24 — State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today said that the findings of a new study commissioned by two of the state’s leading manufacturing advocates – the Manufacturers Alliance of New York State and the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) – reveal that while nearly 70% of the state’s manufacturing executives remain optimistic about staying in business in the state, 60% of them also believe that the state’s business climate is headed in the wrong direction.

Nearly half (46%) of the business leaders polled as part of the new study pointed to high taxes as the greatest competitive obstacle they face.

O'Mara serving on new Senate task force to examine growing heroin epidemic regionally, statewide

Albany, N.Y., March 18—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) said today that he will serve as a member on the Senate Majority Coalition’s new Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction.

The creation of the bipartisan task force was announced in Albany.  It arrives as local police departments, including many across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, continue to point to the alarming rise in the availability and use of heroin, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs.

Elmira, N.Y., March 13—New York State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) today reminded area residents that they will hold several community meetings across the region on Saturday, March 15, 2014.

"We hope our constituents will take advantage of these community meetings to learn more about and contribute to this year’s challenges and debates over taxes, regulations, mandates, economic development, health care, education, and other key issues," O’Mara and Palmesano said in a joint statement.  “Community meetings offer the kind of direct give and take that’s fundamental to effective government.”

O'Mara and Palmesano rally statewide support for local roads and bridges

Albany, N.Y., March 5—A group of nearly 100 state legislators, led by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning), today joined county and town highway superintendents and other local leaders from across New York to call for increased state support for local roads and bridges.

Local highway superintendents from every region of the state have  been in Albany this week as part of their “2014  ‘Local Roads Matter’ Grassroots Advocacy Campaign for Local Roads & Bridges.”
