Senate goes first to approve anti-heroin agreement (Updated, June 20th)

Albany, N.Y., June 19—The New York State Senate gave its approval tonight to a series of anti-heroin initiatives co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to respond to the growing heroin crisis across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide.

The legislation is scheduled to be approved by the Assembly later tonight or tomorrow [Update, June 20, 2014: The Assembly also approved all of the anti-heroin measures late Thursday night, read more HERE].

Senate approves bike safety legislation co-sponsored by O'Mara, who says new law locally would help honor memory of Matt Miller

Albany, N.Y., June 19—The State Senate approved legislation last night, co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), to incorporate a “bicycle and pedestrian safety” component into New York State’s pre-licensing driver’s education and examination requirements.

The measure was approved with strong bipartisan support in the Senate, 58 to 1.

O'Mara says legislative agreement on anti-heroin legislation takes crucial first responses, but he criticizes lack of tougher sanctions against dealers

Albany, N.Y., June 18—A three-way agreement announced today between both houses of the Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo will enact a series of anti-heroin initiatives co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to respond to the growing heroin crisis across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide.

The new laws, which will be approved by the Senate and Assembly by the end of the week, and then signed into law by the governor, will enhance prevention and treatment services, heighten public awareness and education on heroin’s dangers, and increase some criminal penalties to try to deter the spread of the highly addictive drug.

O'Mara signs on to legislation calling for 3-year delay of Common Core

Albany, N.Y., June 17—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today announced that he will co-sponsor legislation to halt the implementation of the state’s new, controversial Common Core educational standards for three years.

O’Mara, who earlier this year joined what’s become a rapidly building consensus within the Legislature to fully delay Common Core’s implementation, said that supporters of the proposed legislation (S.6604-A/A.8844-A) will be pushing for its enactment before the end of the Legislature’s regularly scheduled session this week.

Senate approves legislation targeting Medicaid fraud

Albany, N.Y., June 12 —The State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to continue efforts to combat abuse, fraud and waste in New York’s $54-billion-plus system of Medicaid.

At a legislative budget hearing in Albany earlier this year, the state’s Medicaid Inspector General, James Cox, highlighted the importance of local efforts to further combat and prevent abuses of the New York’s system of Medicaid.

Legislature gives go-ahead to O'Mara-sponsored legislation to encourage growth of industrial hemp; Cornell University, Farm Bureau, others support move to strengthen ag industry, create jobs

Albany, N.Y., June 11 —The New York State Legislature today gave final approval to legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell) to make New York the 16th state in the nation to set the framework for growing industrial hemp as a way to diversify and strengthen New York’s leading agricultural industry.

The legislation (S.7047/A.8297) now goes to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

Albany, N.Y., June 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano paid tribute at the Capitol today to Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, this year’s 87th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion.

O’Mara and Palmesano sponsored a Legislative Resolution honoring Hathwar’s achievement, which was presented to all of the members of the State Legislature during today’s Senate and Assembly sessions.  Hathwar was recognized in person by each legislative house.

O'Mara issues reminder on state-sponsored emergency preparedness training program on Saturday, June 7th, in Chemung County ~ online preregistration required, sign up now

Horseheads, N.Y., May 30 — State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a state-sponsored “Citizen Preparedness Corps Training Program” will be held at Horseheads High School on Saturday, June 7,  2014.

The program is free of charge but participants must complete an online registration prior to the event.  According to the office of Governor Andrew Cuomo, registration is limited and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

O'Mara honors Yates County health professional as 2014 New York State Senate 'Woman of Distinction'

Albany, N.Y., May 13—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) paid tribute to Lauren R. Snyder, a long-time public health professional in Yates County, as a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” at an awards ceremony in Albany on Tuesday. 

Snyder, a Penn Yan native who served as the Yates County Public Health Director for 28 years before retiring in 2009, represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District at a statewide tribute event in the Legislative Office Building in Albany as part of the state Senate’s 17th Annual “Women of Distinction” program.
