O'Mara launches online petition to save the Elmira Psychiatric Center (Updated)

Albany, N.Y., July 16—One week after the Cuomo administration unveiled its plan to shut down the Elmira Psychiatric Center (Elmira PC) next year, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) has launched an online, “Join The Fight!” petition to rally public support for keeping the Elmira PC open.

New law sponsored by O'Mara and Palmesano designates 'Christopher J. Scott Memorial Highway' in tribute to fallen local soldier

Albany, N.Y., July 9—Legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) to designate a portion of  State Route 14A between the town of Reading in Schuyler County and the village of Dundee in Yates County as the “Christopher J. Scott Memorial Highway,” has been signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Cuomo approved the measure early last week, on Wednesday, July 3, to coincide with the following day’s Fourth of July observance.  He approved several similar pieces of legislation honoring three other fallen soldiers across New York.

O'Mara: Reports signal agreement on funding restoration for people with disabilities

Albany, N.Y., June 13—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) released a statement on today’s news reports that the Legislature and Governor Andrew Cuomo are working toward an agreement before the end of the legislative session next week to restore a $90-million cut in funding to the state Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) that was included in this year’s state budget.

Senate approves anti-meth legislation co-sponsored by O'Mara, targets meth labs

Albany, N.Y., June 13—The New York State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to enhance the ability of local police and district attorneys to track and prosecute violations of restrictions on over-the-counter sales of cold medications that are key ingredients used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

O'Mara, colleagues move to end unfunded state mandates as part of comprehensive reform effort

Albany, N.Y., June 10--The State Senate today kicked off a comprehensive effort announced late last week to reform state rules, regulations and mandates by approving a series of relief measures including legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to end the practice of unfunded state mandates on local governments and school districts.

The O’Mara-sponsored legislation was approved by the Senate by a vote of 51 to 9.

Just in time for summer, the long-awaited return of swimming at Stony Brook State Park!

 

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation today announced that the stream-fed swimming pool at Stony Brook State Park in Steuben County will reopen for the season on June 22. The pool has been closed since the end of the 2009 season due to water quality and clarity issues and budget constraints.

State Legislature gives OK to legislation strengthening 'Emergency Services Revolving Loan Fund'

 

 

Albany, N.Y., June 5—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) has voted in favor of legislation unanimously approved by the Senate late yesterday to strengthen a key New York State assistance program to help local volunteer fire departments and emergency squads – as well as cities, counties, towns and villages -- repair and purchase firefighting and rescue equipment, and meet other emergency services infrastructure needs.

Senate approves 'Dairy Farm Energy Assistance Fund' ~ O'Mara co-sponsors legislation, calling it a 'wise investment in the future of upstate dairy farms'

 

Albany, N.Y., May 29—The New York State Senate today approved legislation co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to establish a “Dairy Farm Improved Energy Efficiency Loan Fund.”

The legislation (S.1081/A.4021) passed the Senate by a vote of 60 to 1.

The proposed new loan fund, which would be administered by the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA), would provide state grants and low-interest loans to help dairy farmers undertake energy efficiency projects and purchase cutting-edge energy technologies.

Senator O'Mara honors Beverly Stamp as a 'Woman of Distinction' at a statewide ceremony in Albany

Albany, N.Y., May 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) honored Beverly “Bev” Stamp, co-owner and operator of Lakewood Vineyards near Watkins Glen, as a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” at a ceremony in Albany this evening. 

Stamp, a longtime and beloved ambassador of New York State’s nationally and internationally renowned wine and grape industry,  represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District at the statewide awards tribute in the Legislative Office Building.  She and her husband, the late LaMont “Monty” Stamp, are widely admired as stalwarts of the industry.

Saturday, April 27, 2013 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day ~ Find out more, including a collection site near you ~ Effort builds on last year's I-STOP Law

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

According to the DEA, this is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

Senate approves O'Mara's legislation to combat proliferation of meth labs

Albany, N.Y., April 23—While police and firefighters in the city of Elmira today were on the scene of a suspected meth lab, the New York State Senate approved, by a strong bipartisan vote of  57 to 5, legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to further outlaw the operation of clandestine methamphetamine labs by increasing the criminal penalties for the possession of meth manufacturing material and the unlawful manufacture of meth, implementing a series of increasingly severe felony offenses.

O'Mara: President, Congress consider imposing 'huge' tax increase on New Yorkers

Albany, N.Y., April 18-State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) welcomed Governor Andrew Cuomo’s call earlier this week for Congress and President Barack Obama to reject proposals surfacing as part of federal budget discussions to eliminate the ability of New York State taxpayers to deduct their state and local taxes, including property taxes, from their federal taxes.

Cuomo released an analysis in Albany on Tuesday showing that such a move at the federal level would cost millions of New York taxpayers billions of dollars annually.
