Senator O'Mara stands up for veterans and military families

Albany, N.Y., March 6—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) joined several of his Senate colleagues this week to call for increased state funding to support the expansion of a groundbreaking treatment program for military servicemen and servicewomen suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The project’s Executive Director is Dr. Frank J. Bourke of Corning, a clinical psychologist with more than three decades of experience in the field.  O’Mara said that he’s worked with Bourke over the past several years to help advance and promote the Research & Recognition Project in support of veterans and military families.

Albany, N.Y., March 4—A bipartisan group of 114 state legislators, organized by state Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning), today joined county and town highway superintendents and other local leaders from across New York to call for increased state support for local roads, bridges and culverts.

Albany, N.Y., January 28--At a legislative budget hearing in Albany today, Senator O'Mara questioned state Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball on Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to create a $30-million farmland preservation fund for the Southern Tier.

O'Mara believes the proposal pays "short shrift" to regional farmers.

Albany, N.Y., January 21—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today called Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed 2015-2016 state budget “not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.”  

O’Mara said, “I’ll keep on saying it: New York government needs to stay focused, more than anything else, on taking action after action after action on Upstate manufacturing job growth and eliminating the crushing burdens of mandates, regulations and taxes.  It begins and ends with addressing these priorities. The governor’s blueprint is not aggressive enough on these priorities, and it’s not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.

Senator O'Mara, Assemblyman Palmesano and legislative colleagues pay tribute to Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, this year's National Spelling Bee co-champion

Albany, N.Y., June 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano today paid tribute at the State Capitol to Sriram Hathwar of Painted Post, this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion.

O’Mara and Palmesano sponsored a Joint Legislative Resolution honoring Hathwar’s achievement, which was presented to all of the members of the State Legislature during today’s Senate and Assembly sessions.  Hathwar was recognized in person by each legislative house.

Elmira, N.Y., May 16—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today brought the Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to Elmira College for a public round table discussion on the growing heroin epidemic regionally and statewide.

The legislative hearing was held at Elmira College’s Hamilton Hall.

O’Mara was joined at today’s hearing by the Task Force Vice Chairman, Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Seneca Falls), and area Assemblymen Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) and Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning).

Senator O'Mara joins state manufacturing leaders to call for tax and regulatory reform

Albany, N.Y., March 24 — State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today said that the findings of a new study commissioned by two of the state’s leading manufacturing advocates – the Manufacturers Alliance of New York State and the New York State Economic Development Council (NYSEDC) – reveal that while nearly 70% of the state’s manufacturing executives remain optimistic about staying in business in the state, 60% of them also believe that the state’s business climate is headed in the wrong direction.

Nearly half (46%) of the business leaders polled as part of the new study pointed to high taxes as the greatest competitive obstacle they face.

Senator O'Mara addresses local Monterey Shock supporters at the March 11th protest rally in Albany

Albany, N.Y., March 11—State Senator Tom O'Mara addressed local supporters of the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility at a public rally in Albany today and said that the Senate Majority Coalition, in its one-house budget resolution scheduled to be unveiled and acted on this week, will reject Governor Andrew Cuomo's plan to close the facility.
