The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 901 at 113 Keefe St. on Elmira’s Southside will hold an observance event at 11 a.m. today to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day. The public is welcome.




O'Mara supporting renewed push for 'Hire-a-Vet' tax credit

Albany, N.Y., January 31—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today said that he will seek to co-sponsor and strongly support legislation in the Senate to provide a tax credit to state businesses that hire veterans returning home from military service.

O’Mara highlighted federal Bureau of Labor statistics from 2012 showing that unemployment reached a staggering 20 percent for veterans under the age of 30 who have recently returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan.  Moreover, statistics show that a significant number of recently returned veterans report service-connected disabilities.


O'Mara, Palmesano continue to urge support for a second RenovatingHope project locally ~ Less than one week to go in online voting

Bath, N.Y., March 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning) today urged area residents to support the veterans assistance organization RenovatingHope by voting daily online in the The Home Depot Foundation’s 2nd annual “Aprons in Action” contest.

In a joint statement, O’Mara and Palmesano said: “We are proud to take every opportunity that we possibly can to support our veterans.  We hope that as many area residents as possible will join us in this effort to help RenovatingHope make a life-changing difference for another local hero.”


O'Mara salutes Hire-a-Vet tax credit in new state budget

Albany, N.Y., March 28—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today said that one of the highlights of the new state budget is the creation of a Hire-a-Vet tax credit to encourage businesses throughout New York to hire returning veterans.

That’s a move O’Mara’s strongly supported and co-sponsored over the past year.


O'Mara: Submit a nomination for the Senate's Veterans' Hall of Fame

Albany, N.Y., April 4—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) announced today that he’s accepting nominations for the New York State Senate’s “Veterans Hall of Fame” -- an online tribute to the military and civilian lives of distinguished veterans from across New York State.

On Flag Day, O'Mara will pay tribute to local WWII veteran at ceremony this afternoon


Painted Post, N.Y., June 14--On Flag Day, Friday, June 14, 2013, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) will hold a ceremony at the Painted Post Village Hall (261 Steuben Street, Painted Post) to induct Steuben County native and Painted Post Mayor Roswell L. “Roz” Crozier, Jr. into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
