State Senate's public hearings on tax reform get underway in Albany today ~ Watch live beginning at 10 a.m.

Albany, N.Y., September 3--The New York State Senate committees on Finance, and Investigations and Government Operations, kicks off a series of five statewide public hearings throughout September and October to hear testimony from regional and statewide business leaders on how state tax policies can be reformed to promote private-sector job growth.

Reminder: Deadline for applying for next State Police civil service exam is September 8th

The deadline for applying for the next state civil service exam to become a New York State Trooper- which won't be offered again for at least another four years -- is Sunday, September 8, 2013.  The test will take place at several locations statewide in October.

Local, state and federal leaders rallying support for the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility

The effort's underway to save the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Schuyler County which, it was recently announced by the administration of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, has been targeted for closure next year. 

Senator O'Mara has expressed his strong opposition to the proposed closing.

NYS Department of Health issues important bulletin for regional, statewide early intervention providers

On Tuesday, August 13, 2013, the State Department of Health (DOH) issued an important bulletin for early intervention providers throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide.

According to DOH, state-funded "safety net payments" will be issued to early intervention providers in response to provider concerns about the lack of payment of claims submitted to insurance companies. 

The department's action is in response to a large number of insurance companies' lack of compliance with recently enacted Early Intervention Program reforms.

2013-2014 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses, and Deer Management Permits (DMPs), now available

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that the 2013-2014 hunting, fishing and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) became available for purchase beginning Monday, August 12, 2013 at any of the DEC's 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses can also be ordered by telephone or online. The 2013-2014 sporting licenses are valid beginning October 1, 2013.

Volunteers being sought for local river projects on Saturday

The calls are going out for volunteers this Saturday, August 10th, to assist projects along a few local rivers.

In Cohocton, members of local Trout Unlimited Chapters and other volunteers will clear away vegetation from around the 800 trees that were planted along the Cohocton River in May as part of the Cohocton Watershed Shade Enhancement Project.  Read more HERE...

O'Mara criticizes hiring of 'new bureaucracy' at state Department of Corrections

 

Albany, N.Y., August 1—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) criticized the Cuomo administration for hiring nearly two dozen new “assistant deputy superintendents” within the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) at the same time that the administration has announced plans to shut down another four upstate correctional facilities, including the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Schuyler County.

O'Mara, colleagues honor Hornell's Zack Bacon, one of region's outstanding high school athletes

Senator O'Mara, Assemblyman Bill Nojay and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano took the opportunity last Saturday (July 27) in Hornell, on the main court of the Gus Macker Tournament, to honor Zach Bacon, one of the region's outstanding high school athletes.

A recent graduate of Hornell High School who'll be attending and playing football at Alfred University this fall, as a high school senior Bacon was a two-time state champion in football and wrestling -- the first such two-time champion in Hornell's history.

Senator O'Mara statement on the Cuomo administration plan to close the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Schuyler County

 

Albany, N.Y., July 26— State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) released the following statement on today’s announcement by the Cuomo administration that it will close the Monterey Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in Schuyler County and three other state correctional facilities over the next 12 months: 

"It's more tough news for a region already reeling from devastating job losses and coming on the heels of the Cuomo administration’s recent announcement that it plans to shut down inpatient services at the Elmira Psychiatric Center.
