Senator O'Mara reacts to Governor Cuomo's new state budget plan

Albany, N.Y., January 21—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today called Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed 2015-2016 state budget “not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.”  

O’Mara said, “I’ll keep on saying it: New York government needs to stay focused, more than anything else, on taking action after action after action on Upstate manufacturing job growth and eliminating the crushing burdens of mandates, regulations and taxes.  It begins and ends with addressing these priorities. The governor’s blueprint is not aggressive enough on these priorities, and it’s not aggressive enough on creating Southern Tier jobs.

Cuomo pits Upstate regions against each other in competition for economic development aid ~ O'Mara, others say much more needs to be done to turn around Upstate

In Rochester yesterday, Governor Cuomo announced an Upstate economic development competition that will pit seven Upstate regions against each other.  Under the governor's plan, three regions will ultimately share $1.5 billion in state assistance.

Senator O'Mara and other local and statewide leaders expressed some reservations in response to the Cuomo plan and pointed to the need to do much more to turn around the Upstate economy.

O'Mara continues to co-sponsor legislation to repeal NY SAFE Act ~ On two-year anniversary of bill's signing, local opposition remains strong

Elmira, N.Y., January 15—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) today announced that he is continuing to co-sponsor legislation in the Senate to repeal the NY SAFE Act, which was signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo two years ago today, on January 15, 2013.

O’Mara was one of 18 state senators who voted against the SAFE Act two years ago.

'Cuomo's support sought for completion of I-86 project' ~ O'Mara says completion of Interstate 86 is a critical step for the Southern Tier economy

"We need to do all and everything we can to put ourselves on the map and to encourage and foster economic growth and the job creation that comes with that," Senator O'Mara recently told the Star-Gazette. "The extension of I-86 to its completion, as was originally proposed, is important."

'Talk of moving fire academy concerns local lawmakers' ~ Senator O'Mara, others remain concerned about Cuomo administration's plans for the Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls

Throughout last year's budget negotiations, Senator O'Mara questioned the Cuomo administration on its plans for the future of the Frederick L. Warder Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls -- and expressed his strong belief, and the belief of many area officials, that the state should not relocate the Academy.

"The proposed Wharton Studio Museum is an exciting endeavor to secure Ithaca's place in the history of silent movies and the American film industry overall. POLICE SAFETY

The recent killings of two on-duty New York City police officers have reignited, in many places, long-simmering conflicts between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve.

It's a highly dangerous time for all of us.

Governor Cuomo and other top state officials have signaled their intention to make criminal justice reform a top priority in 2015. In light of these stated intentions -- and in response to them -- the Senate Republican Conference wants to ensure that a key centerpiece of any upcoming debate is not overlooked: police safety.

O'Mara will continue Senate offices in Elmira, Bath and Albany in 2015

Elmira, N.Y., January 6—To help kick off the new year in New York State government, which officially begins tomorrow at the Capitol, State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today announced 2015 contact information for his district offices in Elmira and Bath, and his Albany office.

O’Mara is beginning his third consecutive, two-year term representing the state’s 58th Senate District encompassing all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties, and a part of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield and Ulysses).

Funeral services being held in Manhattan this morning for former New York Governor Mario Cuomo

Former, three-term New York Governor Mario Cuomo will be laid to rest today. 

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Governor Andrew Cuomo and the entire Cuomo family.

Funeral services are being held, beginning at 11:00 a.m., at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan.
