O'Mara bringing Senate task force to Elmira to examine growing heroin crisis throughout region

Elmira, N.Y., May 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) announced today that he will bring the Senate Majority Coalition’s Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to Elmira College on Friday, May 16, 2014 for a legislative hearing on the growing heroin epidemic regionally and statewide.

The hearing, which will be open to the public, will be held at Elmira College’s Hamilton Hall from 10:00 a.m. to Noon.

O'Mara will honor Yates County woman as local 'Woman of Distinction' ~ former Yates County Public Health Director Lauren Snyder will be honored at an Albany awards ceremony next week

Penn Yan, N.Y., May 6—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) announced that he will honor Lauren R. Snyder, a long-time public health professional in Yates County, as a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction.” 

Snyder, a Penn Yan native who served as the Yates County Public Health Director for 28 years before retiring in 2009, will represent O’Mara’s 58th Senate District at a statewide awards ceremony in the Legislative Office Building in Albany next Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Senate approves O'Mara's legislation targeting meth labs

Albany, N.Y., April 29—The state Legislature returned to Albany this week to begin the final weeks of this year’s legislative session and one of the first orders of business for the New York State Senate yesterday was to approve legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to further outlaw the operation of clandestine methamphetamine labs. 

The legislation was approved with strong bipartisan support in the Senate by a vote of  55 to 4.  The measure now goes to the state Assembly where action on the legislation has been stalled for the past few years.

O'Mara: National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Important in the Ongoing Fight Against Abuse

Elmira, N.Y., April 23—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that Saturday, April 26, 2014 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and law enforcement agencies across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions will operate drop-off centers for people to anonymously dispose of their unused prescription drugs.

"It’s incredibly important that our local law enforcement leaders continue to participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Their ongoing leadership in this overall effort to combat prescription drug abuse makes all the difference,” said O’Mara.

O'Mara praises this weekend's RecruitNY campaign to boost local volunteer firefighter, EMT ranks ~ find out if a department near you is holding an Open House

Elmira, N.Y., April 22—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a number of the region’s volunteer fire departments will hold open houses this weekend as part of “RecruitNY,” a statewide public awareness initiative sponsored by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and others to encourage the recruitment of local volunteer firefighters and EMTs.

The annual event, which takes place this year on April 26-27, is coordinated by FASNY in partnership with the state Association of Fire Districts, Association of Fire Chiefs, Volunteer Fire Police Association and the County Fire Coordinators’ Association.

Yates County fire, EMS volunteers honored

Yates County Emergency Services recently honored many of the local volunteers who contribute thousands of hours of service to communities across  the county.  In fact, they paid tribute to a total of 710 volunteers who gave 8,484 hours of training and service.

Congratulations -- and thank you -- to all of this year's honorees and special award recipients.

ELMIRA AARP CHAPTER 276 ~ CELEBRATING 50 YEARS!

Elmira, N.Y., April 16--Earlier today at the Elmira Holiday Inn-Riverview, State Senator Tom O'Mara (R,C-Big Flats) helped celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Elmira Chapter 276 of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

The senator presented the group with a Legislative Resolution he sponsored in the Senate to mark the milestone, which was unanimously adopted by the full Senate on February 4, 2014.

3rd Annual 'I Love My Park Day' on May 3rd (Updated)

Elmira, N.Y., May 1—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that the 3rd Annual “I Love My Park Day” will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at state parks and historic sites across New York, including events at several local sites. 

The statewide event, sponsored by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and local groups, is aimed at encouraging volunteer efforts to enhance New York’s parks and historic sites and promote the entire park system.

Take part, pitch in

Americans are known for volunteering.  In fact we’re coming off a week when the nation observed National Volunteer Week in tribute to all of the many millions of citizens throughout our communities, of every age and from all walks of life, who make such a difference with their willingness to devote time, energy and sacrifice to the lives and needs of others. 

It’s a recognition, however, that shouldn’t – and fortunately doesn’t – end after just one week.

Local municipalities see boost in state support for local roads, bridges
