OPPOSING THE NY SAFE ACT

State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), who was one of 18 state senators who voted against the recently enacted NY SAFE Act, addresses the February 28th opposition rally in Albany – one of the largest-ever rallies of its kind at the capital.

More than 5,000 opponents of the SAFE Act, including many from across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, traveled to the Albany to participate in the daylong protest.

O'Mara seeking nominations for Senate's 16th Annual 'Women of Distinction' tribute

Elmira, N.Y., February 25—As part of New York State’s celebration of Women’s History Month throughout March, Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) announced today that he is accepting nominations for the Senate's 16th annual "Women of Distinction" program to honor local women making outstanding contributions to area communities.

O'Mara critical of Cuomo failure to pull the plug on utility tax as part of budget amendments

Albany, N.Y., February 22—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee,  today criticized Governor Andrew Cuomo for failing to take action on his own to reject a five-year extension of a  “staggering” energy tax first imposed on New Yorkers in 2009.

O’Mara said that he and his Senate Republican colleagues will continue to push for the proposal’s rejection during final state budget negotiations with the Assembly and the governor over the next several weeks.

O'Mara lauds state support for Cornell University's energy efficiency initiatives

Ithaca, February 20--The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council (STREDC) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently announced that Cornell University has been awarded $616,000 in state funding to advance energy efficiency projects and studies to support the university's short- and long-term goals to reduce energy consumption and become a climate-neutral campus.

O'Mara reappointed to Rural Resources Commission; in a mostly downstate- and urban-oriented State Legislature, bipartisan group works to keep focus on rural issues, challenges

Albany, N.Y., February 14—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has been reappointed as one of five state senators who will serve on the joint, bipartisan Legislative Commission on Rural Resources.

O’Mara’s reappointment to a second consecutive two-year term on the Commission was announced by the Senate leadership this week.

O'Mara: Throw the flag on New York City legislator's proposal to ban youth football (Updated)

Albany, N.Y., February 11—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today threw the flag against a New York City legislator’s proposal to ban youth football in New York State.

This morning’s New York Daily News reports that Bronx Assemblyman Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx) has introduced legislation “to prohibit children younger than 11 from playing organized tackle football anywhere in the state.”

O’Mara strongly rejected the idea.

“Talk about being out of bounds,” said O’Mara.  “What we need to ban is knee-jerk legislation.  What’s next?  No more fastballs in Little League?  Enough.”

O'Mara calls for bold action on state's part to boost upstate manufacturing

Elmira, N.Y., February 10—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) has introduced legislation calling for an unprecedented tax cut for manufacturers across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide. 

He billed the measure as one cornerstone of a renewed state commitment to the upstate New York manufacturing sector, a move he believes would help spark broad-based, badly needed private-sector job growth.
