Senator O'Mara honors Beverly Stamp as a 'Woman of Distinction' at a statewide ceremony in Albany

Albany, N.Y., May 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) honored Beverly “Bev” Stamp, co-owner and operator of Lakewood Vineyards near Watkins Glen, as a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” at a ceremony in Albany this evening. 

Stamp, a longtime and beloved ambassador of New York State’s nationally and internationally renowned wine and grape industry,  represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District at the statewide awards tribute in the Legislative Office Building.  She and her husband, the late LaMont “Monty” Stamp, are widely admired as stalwarts of the industry.

Congratulations to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier!

Elmira, N.Y., May 1—Congratulations to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and thank you to all of the area residents who supported the food bank by voting online throughout the month of April in the Walmart Foundation-sponsored “Fighting Hunger Together” contest.

Since April 1st, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier has been competing with regional food banks across the country in the online voting contest and, today, is one of the Top 40 food banks that will receive a $45,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation.

National Volunteer Week

Senator Tom O'Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano joined the Institute for Human Services and the United Way of the Southern Tier at a public recognition ceremony in Corning this morning to pay tribute to the leaders of several local volunteer organizations and their volunteer members.

Community leaders recognized at this morning's event included, in the photo from left to right: Patrick Rogers, Executive Director of the Institute for Human Services; Michael Keane, Director of the Steuben County Office for the Aging; Mark Edgerly, Chairman of the Chemung Volunteer Action Corps; and Carol Houssock, Director of the Chemung Volunteer Action Corps.  At the far right is Sharon Murphy, a representative from Congressman Tom Reed's office.

Saturday, April 27, 2013 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day ~ Find out more, including a collection site near you ~ Effort builds on last year's I-STOP Law

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 

According to the DEA, this is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

What would we do?

It’s a thought that comes to mind every time there’s another natural disaster, another emergency, another act of terror like what we saw last week in Boston and in Texas: What would we do without our first responders?

Always among the most powerful images from these terrible events are the photos of firefighters carrying the wounded to safety, first responders rushing toward – not away from – danger, police officers instinctively shielding everyone else from harm.

We saw these images yet again last week in the aftermaths of the Boston Marathon bombings and the fertilizer plant explosion in central Texas. They are images of heroism and they leave us wondering: Where would we turn without these heroes in these times of need?

Albany, N.Y., April 23—While police and firefighters in the city of Elmira today were on the scene of a suspected meth lab, the New York State Senate approved, by a strong bipartisan vote of  57 to 5, legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to further outlaw the operation of clandestine methamphetamine labs by increasing the criminal penalties for the possession of meth manufacturing material and the unlawful manufacture of meth, implementing a series of increasingly severe felony offenses.

O'Mara reminds area residents that 'I Love My Park Day' this Saturday, May 4th offers volunteer opportunities

Elmira, N.Y. May 2 —State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that the 2nd Annual “I Love My Park Day” will take place this Saturday, May 4, 2013 and will include events at two local sites.

The statewide event, sponsored by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and local groups, is aimed at encouraging volunteer efforts to enhance New York’s parks and historic sites and promote the entire park system.
