On eve of nation's July 4th observance, Governor Cuomo signs O'Mara-Palmesano legislation to designate the 'Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway' in tribute to fallen local hero

Albany, N.Y., July 3-Legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C, Corning) to designate a portion of I-390 in Steuben County as the “Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway” has been signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The designation (S.7739/A.10726/Chapter 101 of the Laws of 2012), which was unanimously approved by the Legislature two weeks ago, honors the memory and pays tribute to the life and service of United States Army Sgt. Devin A. Snyder of Cohocton, Steuben County, who was killed on June 4, 2011 while serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Snyder was the first female soldier from western New York to die in the war.

A Cool Town

Summer in the Finger Lakes is already getting into full swing, including this weekend's "America's Coolest Small Town 2012" celebration in Hammondsport, Steuben County.

I'll be joining other area officials and community residents at Saturday’s village-wide celebration of Hammondsport’s  designation as Budget Travel magazine’s “America’s Coolest Small Town.”

What a great way to help welcome another season of summer tourism in the Finger Lakes.  It took a fantastic, region-wide show of support to help Hammondsport rise to the top, and it’s a real tribute to one of our great Finger Lakes towns.

Second round of Recharge NY power allocations benefit Southern Tier businesses, manufacturers

Albany, N.Y., June 28—State Senator Tom O'Mara (R-C, Big Flats), a member of the Senate Energy and Telecommunications Committee, said today that a number of Southern Tier businesses and manufacturers are among the 161 businesses and other organizations statewide being awarded more than 80 megawatts (MW) of lower-cost economic development power as part of the second round of allocations under the ReCharge New York (RNY) program.

Senate approves legislation, co-sponsored by O'Mara, targeting meth makers

Albany, N.Y., June 27—The New York State Senate has approved legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats), to restrict sales of over-the-counter cold medications that are key ingredients used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

O’Mara, noting the dramatic rise in meth-related arrests and other incidents across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions over the past year, said that the legislation targets the manufacturing of the dangerous and highly addictive drug.

Area state lawmakers tout repeal of 'Ropes Law'--unfunded state mandate that forces rural, small fire departments to purchase unneeded equipment

Albany, N.Y.— State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Assemblyman Chris Friend (R-Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R,C-Corning) have voted in favor of legislation, given final legislative approval, to eliminate the state’s one-size-fits-all “Ropes Law” for firefighter safety and allow local fire departments more flexibility to choose equipment that best meets the needs and conditions of their communities.

Legislature approves designation of 'Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway' in Steuben County to honor life, service of fallen soldier

Albany, N.Y.—The New York State Legislature has unanimously approved legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano (R-C, Corning) to designate a portion of I-390 in Steuben County as the “Sergeant Devin Snyder Memorial Highway.”

Senator O'Mara welcomes area veterans' services leaders to the Senate Chamber

Albany, N.Y., June 21—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) recently welcomed two area veterans’ services leaders to the historic Senate Chamber on Women Veterans Recognition Day in Albany.

“Amy and Joan served our nation bravely and courageously and continue their service to this very day through their extraordinary commitment to the well-being of our local veterans,” said Senator O’Mara.  “I appreciated this opportunity to express our admiration and gratitude for the difference they’re making in so many lives.”

Senator O'Mara welcomes SU football legend and Hall of Famer Floyd Little to the Senate

Albany, N.Y., June 20—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) recently helped welcome former Syracuse University football legend and pro football Hall of Famer Floyd Little to the Senate Chamber.

O’Mara, a graduate of Syracuse University College of Law, joined his legislative colleagues to pay tribute to Little’s outstanding achievements in football, business and community service.

Legislature approves "Protection of People With Special Needs Act"

Albany, N.Y., June 20—New York State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today voted in favor of legislation approved by the Senate and Assembly to enact the “Protection of People With Special Needs Act” to reform and strengthen protections for more than one million state residents with special needs who are served by facilities and programs operated, licensed and certified by state agencies.

The agreed-upon legislation now goes to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

Senate approves 'Hire-a-Vet' legislation

Albany, N.Y., June 20—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) voted in favor of legislation approved by the Senate yesterday to provide tax credits to state businesses that hire returning and wounded veterans.

O’Mara highlighted federal Bureau of Labor statistics showing that unemployment has reached a staggering 20 percent for veterans under the age of 30 who have recently returned home from Iraq and Afghanistan.  Moreover, statistics show that a significant number of recently returned veterans report service-connected disabilities.

Senate acts quickly to close dangerous loophole in state's child pornography laws

Albany, N.Y., Jnne 19—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) today voted in favor of agreed-upon legislation to prohibit Internet access of child pornography.

In 1996, New York State enacted a law prohibiting the possession of child pornography. However, in a case decided on May 8, 2012, the New York Court of Appeals held that existing state law did not prohibit “accessing and viewing” child pornography on the Internet. The Court specifically invited the Legislature to amend state Penal Law to criminalize accessing child pornography with the intent to view it on the Internet.
