Lauren R. Snyder

If, as it’s been said, good health and good sense are two of life’s great blessings, then Lauren R. Snyder has successfully devoted a lifetime as a public health professional to promoting this idea.

Born and raised in Penn Yan, New York, Ms. Snyder graduated from Penn Yan Academy, the University of Buff alo (RN, BSN) and SUNY at Brockport (MPA). She was employed at Yates County Public Health for 33 years, including 28 years as Director before her retirement in 2009. She is widely admired as the driving force behind countless achievements to protect and improve the health of Yates County’s residents.

O'Mara honors Yates County health professional as 2014 New York State Senate 'Woman of Distinction'

Albany, N.Y., May 13—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) paid tribute to Lauren R. Snyder, a long-time public health professional in Yates County, as a New York State Senate “Woman of Distinction” at an awards ceremony in Albany on Tuesday. 

Snyder, a Penn Yan native who served as the Yates County Public Health Director for 28 years before retiring in 2009, represented O’Mara’s 58th Senate District at a statewide tribute event in the Legislative Office Building in Albany as part of the state Senate’s 17th Annual “Women of Distinction” program.

Legislation to assist NY's disabled vets signed into law

Albany, N.Y., May 13—Legislation co-sponsored by State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) to further assist New York State businesses owned by service-connected disabled veterans, has been signed into law.

The new law, known as the "Service-Disabled Veterans-Owned Business Act," builds on last year’s enactment of a “Hire-a-Vet” business tax credit that O’Mara also co-sponsored.

ADDRESSING HEROIN

Since early April, the Senate Task Force on Heroin has been holding public hearings in every region of the state in response to the alarming rise of heroin abuse being reported from every corner of New York.  

A total of 14 hearings have been scheduled, including one that I'll be sponsoring in Elmira on Friday, May 16, 2014.

O'Mara bringing Senate task force to Elmira to examine growing heroin crisis throughout region

Elmira, N.Y., May 7—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) announced today that he will bring the Senate Majority Coalition’s Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to Elmira College on Friday, May 16, 2014 for a legislative hearing on the growing heroin epidemic regionally and statewide.

The hearing, which will be open to the public, will be held at Elmira College’s Hamilton Hall from 10:00 a.m. to Noon.

Senate approves O'Mara's legislation targeting meth labs

Albany, N.Y., April 29—The state Legislature returned to Albany this week to begin the final weeks of this year’s legislative session and one of the first orders of business for the New York State Senate yesterday was to approve legislation sponsored by Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) to further outlaw the operation of clandestine methamphetamine labs. 

The legislation was approved with strong bipartisan support in the Senate by a vote of  55 to 4.  The measure now goes to the state Assembly where action on the legislation has been stalled for the past few years.

O'Mara: National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Important in the Ongoing Fight Against Abuse

Elmira, N.Y., April 23—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that Saturday, April 26, 2014 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and law enforcement agencies across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions will operate drop-off centers for people to anonymously dispose of their unused prescription drugs.

"It’s incredibly important that our local law enforcement leaders continue to participate in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Their ongoing leadership in this overall effort to combat prescription drug abuse makes all the difference,” said O’Mara.

O'Mara praises this weekend's RecruitNY campaign to boost local volunteer firefighter, EMT ranks ~ find out if a department near you is holding an Open House

Elmira, N.Y., April 22—State Senator Tom O’Mara (R-C, Big Flats) reminded area residents today that a number of the region’s volunteer fire departments will hold open houses this weekend as part of “RecruitNY,” a statewide public awareness initiative sponsored by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) and others to encourage the recruitment of local volunteer firefighters and EMTs.

The annual event, which takes place this year on April 26-27, is coordinated by FASNY in partnership with the state Association of Fire Districts, Association of Fire Chiefs, Volunteer Fire Police Association and the County Fire Coordinators’ Association.
